Twin Tapestry

THREE WISHES is an uplifting, healing love story penned with a kaleidoscope of scenes in oil-paint-brilliance, reminiscent of Norman Rockwell's portraits of small town America.

The first half of the novel is a perfect romance, culminating with the Mars/Venus love declarations and proposals. Instead of abandoning the tale there, BD boldly pulls threads for a new pattern, weaving into strings drifting beyond the love story.

Like a twin tapestry, the second half of the novel dances in the moonlight, revels in the sunlight, then unravels the sensuality of community and family, exposing the mysteries of motherhood at the core of life. Is it because this story taps beautifully into a clear, spiritual wellspring that it feels like a cornucopia of devilish delight and angelic peace?

THREE WISHES is a great and appropriate title, but it doesn't even hint of the complex richness of this novel.

Delinsky's ability to create a powerful symphony of emotion achieves a crescendo here, as romantic love teams up with the natural need to nurture, and the pair surge a win through all life's barriers.

A Tear Jerker of a Story

THREE WISHES is an interesting tale about Bree Walker, a waitress who lives in a small town in Vermont. Walking home, she's struck by a car on a snowy night and lands in the hospital with no memory of how she got there. Even though she can't remember much, she is positive that she's been granted three wishes. Are these wishes real? If she uses them, what happens after using that last wish? She's always wanted a soul mate, a family and a home, but at what cost to her to wish these things into her life? Is it worth the risk?

This book wasn't your normal Barbara Delinsky book. You usually read her books and come away feeling good, or understanding where she was going with the book. This one, however, left me depressed and I wondered what point she was trying to make. The main thing I figured out was that this entire story confused me.

If you haven't read any of Delinsky's books, don't start with this one! THREE WISHES will turn you off of her as an author - try one of her other books to get the real Delinsky!

Bittersweet Love Story

While walking home one evening during a raging snowstorm, waitress Bree Miller is struck by a vehicle skidding out of control on the icy road. The vehicle's driver is renowned author, Tom Gates, who has just moved to the small Vermont town to take stock of his life tainted by fame. Tom accompanies Bree to the hospital, and remains with her during her recovery there, and eventually at home. Bree has no family to speak of, and her dreams of a home, a man to love, and family, appear to be within her grasp in the form of Tom. Eventually, she confides in him of her out-of-body experience, during the time her heart had stopped after the accident. She saw a white light, full of love, which once revived; she felt this entity had given her three wishes. The only thing is, she thinks there's a possibility she may die again once her wishes are fulfilled.

This was my first book to read by this author, and so far I haven't read any of her other work. It was a very well written and compelling story, with interesting, multi-faceted characters. In fact, I could hardly put the book down, because I kept wondering how it would end. The reason I haven't read anything else by this author, as good as she is, is because it was an emotionally draining story for me, full of bittersweet moments. My reading preference leans more toward romantic comedies or sweet, romantic love stories. If you don't mind quite a bit of sadness in your romance reads, then this is probably the book for you.

It's a different kind of read...

The setting is that of a small Vermont town where the community knows everyone and is a family. The waitress at the local cafe, Bree Miller has no family in fact the community is her family. While walking on her way home one evening, Bree is hit by a passing jeep that is forced off the road by a truck that loses control on the icy road. She is rushed to the hospital and has a near-death experience while being revived on the operating table. During her "out-of-body" experience she receives three wishes to ask for.

The driver of the jeep, Tom Gates feels responsible and stays at the hospital for the days that it takes Bree to recover. Bree and Tom start getting to know each other by sharing about each other's lives. Tom is a famous author that has escaped from all of the publicity to the country to find himself again. He had separated himself from friends and family only to find himself alone in his life of fame and fortune. Through his time with Bree, Tom's experiences the joy of a simpler life. As Bree moves home from the hospital Tom becomes a regular there, too, against the wishes of the community, to help Bree continue to recover. She becomes more and more an important part of his life as he does for her- filling a void in her life for love that she never expected to experience. But what about the three wishes... were they real or just a dream? And what happens after the third wish is made? Bree and Tom fall in love but there are still parts of Bree's life that she wants to find out about - like the mystery of her mother that she never knew. Get ready... it's a tear jerker! Bree and Tom's love is sooooo fresh, sweet, and strong - yes, it is graphic at times, too! You will get to know everyone in the community - they all play important parts throughout the story (whether you like them or not). And the end was hard to accept-even though I knew what was coming before it happened but it still hurt. Yes, I cried! And still do just thinking of it, it was that strong. For some it will be depressing, but what a sweet story.

So if you are ready for something different. This one's for you.

Love Story

I'm a bit new to Delinsky, but I've found all of her books have been wonderful love stories, not unlike Three Wishes.

The premise of the story was two lonely people who fate threw together...and one of who has been granted 3 wishes. Will the wishes come true? Will there be a happy ending for these love-birds?

I won't spoil the ending for you, but I will say: you'll either hate it or be ambiguous towards it. However, I can always appreciate it when an author takes a chance. And this book did that, I truly enjoyed the story & the characters.
