Not quite as good as her others

While I think this the main character in this book is just as entertaining as Jennifer Weiner's other characters from previous books, I can't say this book was quite as entertaining as her other ones. While I was still fairly hooked on it, there were times where this book seemed to drag more than her other ones have, and that may have been because I feel like we aren't given enough information at times.

Kate is an enjoyable character to read about, and is fairly easy to relate to if you're not one of those "perfect" mothers. However, you almost wish there was more about Kate and less about searching around for stuff on her dead neighbor, Kitty. And even after all the searching Kate does, you still don't really feel like you learned enough about Kitty to really know her. The ending also feels a bit rushed as if it all of a sudden had to be tied together and stopped. Sort of a, "Oops, better tie up this murder mystery and end the book!" ending.

This book has some great humor, and some enjoyable moments, but isn't quite up to par with Jennifer Weiner's other books. If you greatly enjoyed her other books, I'd recommend reading this one, but be prepared for it to not be quite as good as previous ones and to leave you feeling like something (or somethings) is missing and that it was too rushed at the end. In a way, this might almost have been better stretched out over two books - perhaps one for Kate and her earlier life (before Kitty's death), and then one dealing with the death of Kitty and Kate's searching for answers on it. Many of the holes in it could have been better filled, and then perhaps the ending might not have been so rushed. So while I'd say this is a good read, I can't say it's a must read. And if you haven't read Jennifer Weiner before, definitely start with one of her other books before reading this one.

Good light mystery

This is the second Jennifer Weiner novel for me and it was good. The story is funny and witty. The main character feels out of place in the suburbs and gets herself wrapped up in a murder mystery. Her best friend is a riot and the descriptions of the ladies in the neighborhood are very funny. I could totally picture the characters and the area through the descriptive writing.

Eh...

I have enjoyed Weiner's books in the past so I was looking forward to this read but, unfortunately, it wasn't worth the wait.
I didn't find the story line believable and I kept thinking... that wouldn't actually happen- who does that?! The ending also left me wanting more.

Gotta love a desperate housewife

Ahhhh yes, the modern housewives. They provide such exquisite fodder for a TV show or best-selling novel, don't they? The more high-strung and close to perfection, the better the character. Well, there are plenty in this book to poke fun of. The main character, Kate, is not quite part of the "mommy in-crowd" (and oh, how much her crazy, madcap life mirrors my own) until she is invited over to lunch by the Queen of Perfection. Only thing is, the queen is dead, in her own home. So Kate decides to take on the case of this bizarre murder. After all, she used to have a career in journalism back in the city. I'm not sure how to classify this book - a murder mystery? Chick lit? It's a little bit of both. Weiner's writing is sharp as always and that pulls this storyline out of the cheesiness it could be. But there were so many times that I had to laugh at her wry humor and then remember - hey, somebody DIED. I'm not a big mystery fan, but this was a good one. I didn't see it coming. Obviously, neither did the victim.
