The Mark of the Original Zorro is an A!

A story of rousing adventure, "The Mark of Zorro" was written in 1919 by Johnston McCulley and introduces the daring caballero, Zorro. This one is not to be missed. I bought this original version of the story after seeing Isabel Allende's "Zorro" in the bookstore. I wanted the original story, however, and so, bought Johnston McCulley's book instead. It definitely was not a disappointment.
McCulley's Zorro is an expert swordsman and horse rider who avenges crimes of oppression and mistreatment in Old California. He fights against the authorities, including a Sergeant Gonzales and Captain Ramon.
The story also focuses on a Don Diego Vega, who is a lifeless and languid aristocrat. He is ordered by his father, Don Alejandro, to take a wife and Don Diego is attracted by the Senorita Lolita Pulido. But she wants no part of this lifeless man and instead, meets Zorro and falls in love.
That's all I can tell you without giving away the entire story. But it is interesting that apparently McCulley didn't think he would write another Zorro story, so the masked man is revealed to all at the end.
The book does not strive for literary greatness, but it is an entertaining story. Filled with adventure and romance, "The Mark of Zorro" is a book you won't regret having. Definitely gets an "A" from this reviewer.

But beware this printed edition!

Yes, "The Mark of Zorro" is a light-hearted, spirited adventure romp, but this hardcover, at 25 bucks, is not a place to start.

The story by McCulley, is a terrific read, from stem to stern, even when you know the ending.

The physical book itself is AWFUL.

There are numerous typos throughout the entire book.

The letter "o" gets replaced by the number "6" a half dozen times in the last few pages alone.

There's a half a page duplicated, making for some confusing reading two-thirds of the way through.

The word "the" is often replaced by the the word "Die", making me wonder if there was some German transcriptionist involved somewhere along the line.

Letters are capitalized in the midst of words for no meaning.

It actually made reading this simple tale a chore.

I loved this story, but I hated the actual book it was printed in.

Ultimately the Greatest romance/adventure novel

The only words to describe this book is:Stupendous. But even that cannot give this novel its deserving rate.(If the star rank could go any futher, this book's a certified 20!)Filled with action, romance, and chapter endings that leave you hanging, you'll love this book.(you're a maniac if you hate it!)I've read it about three days ago and I plan on reading it often.Eventhough I am a bit of a spoiler, I won't tell the end.The ending showdown will be a definate surprise is all I can say.
