The Perfect Book

My brother was given this book almost 35 years ago. I shamelessly filched it. Since then I have surely read tens of thousands of books. But I can say with utmost confidence that this book is the best, the most perfect, the MOST WONDERFUL book ever written. I have read it to my own children and to their school classes in their turn. It withstands the ongoing test of time and variety of children. It lives in tape-bound glory in an honored spot on the bookshelf. At night you can see a faint halo.

So what makes this the perfect book? Firstly, it flawlessly follows the immutable Fairy Tale Law of Three giving it that well-grounded solidity found in generations of three aspirants/sisters/brothers/ogres/bears/billy goats gruff, three encounters, three days, three chances, etc. Secondly, it is a rich and engaging story without being wordy or trendy. But thirdly, there's the sense of rightness, of contentment at the state of a well-run world, the desire to go whisking off to that happy kingdom as the last page is regretfully turned. Also, there's pie.

(After wondering for years what a Pickle Chiffon Pie actually tastes like and being prodded by questions from my own children, I conducted extensive research. I found that Pickle Chiffon Pie tastes mysteriously JUST LIKE a green-tinted lemon meringue pie. My children, their classmates, and I were pleased.)

A Great book for the Generations, a must have!

This book I first read in elementary school(I am now 36). I have never forgotten the heartouching and kindness elements that are taught in this book. I just recently bought this to share with my children(13,12, and 8)and they really loved it. We are taking this to my 8 yr. old daughters school for a read out loud day and to share with everyone. Get this book before it disappears again, it took me 29 years to get a copy again.

an important lesson for all

I've loved this book since i was very young. It is such a simple, pure story that i believe everyone should read it at least once. It teaches the values of compassion & tolerance, lessons the world needs to re-learn. I've read this book to every child I've ever baby sat for,(over and over, by request), as well as siblings, friends, siblings of friends, & hopefully, one day, my own children. I still read it occasionally, just as a re-affirmation of the possibility of utopia (with pie, of course). I only wish the book was still in print so that more children could experience the beauty of this amazing story.

Colorful, imaginative title back in print December 2004!

Purple House Press is proud to have released Pickle-Chiffon Pie in December 2004! Same wonderful pictures and text as the 1960s version. Look for The Flying Hockey Stick, also by Jolly Roger, in the summer of 2005.

What a Great Book!!! - Pickle Chiffon...Who would of thought :)

I was given this book as a child, I don't remember how old I was...I just remember this turned into my favorite book. I still have it on my shelf today (I'm 33 with no children yet) and occassionally pick it up to read it.

Such a great story to remind us all about respect for others and that looks aren't everything when you have kindness in your heart.

I highly reccommend reading this even if you are an adult. Enjoy!!
