A is for Alibi

Wonderful !!! I love mystery stories and the Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mystery Series by Sue Grafton are terrific. I've read five so far and will continue till I reach the newest "T is for..." which I have preordered. Love the way Sue Grafton writes and has such terrific endings... Great writing and I'd recommend her books to everyone...

Good Book

Eight years after her release from prison, Nikki Fife hired California Private Investigator, Kinsey Millhone, to find out who killed her husband and framed her for the crime. As Kinsey investigates, she finds out that almost everyone wanted Mr. Fife dead, including his ex-wife, his many mistresses and their special men, and his law partner. But now, the killer has resurfaced and is taking lives again, will hers be next?

When I first opened this novel, I didn't expect to like it. Kinsey is not the best character I've ever read about and at times she's rather not likable (and at other times she's very likable), and the plot seemed to be rather weak. But as the novel progressed, the plot got better and I ended up loving this book. The ending was somewhat unexpected. I figured out who the killer(s) was/were, but the motive was rather interesting.

A is for Average

It takes a superior writer with excellent chacterization skills to keep things lively when the plot basically consists of our PI hero conducting an interminable series of one-on-one interviews. Kinsey Millhone is not a very distinctive character here and author Sue Grafton buries her inquiries in an avalanche of trivial detail. Every time Kinsey goes somewhere, Grafton gives us driving directions that would do Mapquest proud. We read about the decor of everyplace Kinsey visits and learn the menu of every meal she eats. We are 100 pages into the novel before anything even vaguely exciting happens--and even then Kinsey's actions are not very logical. I was prepared to give this novel a much lower rating but I quite enjoyed the last 50 pages, including the abrupt conclusion. This story just took much too long to get moving.

R is for Review

I finally found the 'beginning' of Sue Grafton's alphabet so I could get in on this series from the start. I found 'Alibi' to be a refreshing change from some of the more recent crime novels I've read. The plot was straight out of '40s 'detective noir', and the'hard boiled PI' genre is usually more entertaining than the 'police procedurals' or 'amateur sleuth' stories I usually read.
Kinsey Millhone may not be the most likable private eye, and 'Alibi' isn't the most exciting story, but I found her interesting enough to want to read more books in this series.

Great Read

It's refreshing to read a suspense novel that you can't figure out who done it in the first 10 pages. I look forward to reading more of this author.
