Just plain fun to read

I actually bought this book for my 4 year old, thinking we would "grow" into it, since he's still too young to actually read it. To my surprise, my almost 8 year old loves it. He's a very advanced reader, so this book is very simple for him, but he still enjoys the back and forth reading between himself and an adult. The poems are simple, nothing too exciting, but cute, funny and entertaining to a child. It's definitely a book that will get repeated use. Well worth the money!

You Read to me I'll Read to You

My husband and I have read this to our grandchildren and read together. The kids thought it was great to see us reading together! Great book for fluency in the classroom also.

great format for reading together

This book was great for interactions with reading between two people. One of the stories with mice, dogs and cats was not a good example of how to resolve conflict - threat was countered with threat - but the format for reading together and the rhyming were excellent and the rest of the stories modeled good values. "I hate my hat" is my son's favorite.

Wonderful!

You Read to Me; I'll Read to You, Very Short Stories to Read Together teaches many lessons. The reader will enjoy a group of two-page rhyming stories about animals, hop & skip, the telephone and a snowman. It is written in a rhyming style that, at times, may remind the reader of Dr. Seuss.

The illustrations by Michael Emberley are detailed, funny and endearing. Some have a cartoon quality that may remind the reader of TV cartoons, which lends a certain familiarity to this edition. The illustrations are often humorous and entertaining, with detail that may elude initial readings, but that give it a multiple-readability quality.

This book's rhyming stories include subjects that children will find interesting. But, the way the book is designed also teaches a lesson on following patterns, by reading lines on the left or right sides of the page or both readers reading the text in the page center, thus also teaching waiting for one's turn, and working as part of a team--important life skills.

The most important lesson in this book is teaching the reader to learn to read and to consider reading a valid form of entertainment. However, it also teaches the joy that activity holds and in some of the stories, the reader learns additional skills such as empathy. A favorite line in The Snowman (referring to the snowman), "And if he starts to melt, He'll cry!"

The author is a veteran member of the Literacy Volunteers of America and this book, also part of a series, is a result of her generous and important volunteer experience teaching reading.

Armchair Interviews says: Anything that helps children appreciate the joy and value of reading is great.

It's so rare to find something new in the world of children's books, but this book is a bit different.

This book has a great gimmick. It's a book designed to be read by two people, complete with a chorus to be read by all. The layout (text for one reader to one side, text for the other reader to the other side) and font color act as natural prompts for each reader to read his part. It's a good alternative for the child who doesn't like sappy poetry, since it will still develop his ear to the beauty of verse. My seven year old loved it for one read, and then said I could return it to the library, but I was very happy to have it. It helped broaden his horizons and get him used to some different rhyming words and ways of phrasing. Enjoy!
