The Egypt Game Review

This book is very good!!! It is about six children; April, Melanie, Marshall, Elizabeth, Ken, and Toby. The Egypt Game is them pretending to be priests, gods, godesses, etc. What I liked about it was that the characters were extremely well developed and the plot was clear. I rated it 4 stars because I did not get to the end of it, so I don't know who the murderer is. This book is great and not a waste of money!

A Well Written Story that May Have Your Kids Playing at Idol Worship

When April Hill's mother sends her to live with her grandma, April decides she's too good for her grandmother and Casa Rosada, where her grandmother lives. April makes up her mind that life will stand still until she returns to Hollywood...until she meets Melanie.

Both girls have active imaginations and begin to play at being Egyptians in the storage yard behind the Professor's antique shop. Of course, Melanie's little brother, Marshall, is part of the game as well. And all three kids know that the Egypt Game is no ordinary game.

But can they keep the game and the location of Egypt to themselves? Should they--or would it be more fun to share with a few other kids who can also keep secrets? And, when something terrible happens in the neighborhood, how will the Egyptian Game survive?

As a supplement to a world history lesson on Egypt, this book has no value as it really doesn't include many hard facts. As a work of children's fiction, this book is very well written and has some unexpected twists and turns. Another plus for this book is the fact that the kids are willing to play with children of different ages, even the four year old younger brother. What a good example set for our children by the characters of this book, especially Melanie.

So, what's wrong with this book? Christian parents would not want their children to play at worshipping idols like the children in this book do, and may wish to avoid this book if they think their children will imitate the characters in it. The primary play of the Egypt Game is to set up idols in the "temple" and create ceremonies to worship them, including chants and sacrifices.

The idol worship as central to the play of the imaginative game--and our children could definitely use to play more imaginative games nowadays--is the primary reason I chose to rate this book only three stars. I cannot endorse a book for children that might encourage them to worship false gods and think they are just playing a game.

great book

This book is terrific. I think that the best books for kids, are the ones that are filled with interesting characters, magic and imaginative play. In this book, six children come together and begin the fascinating game of Egypt, where the ordinary becomes extrordinary, where the kids become high priests and priestesses who guard the secrets of egypt! Interwoven are the kid's individual struggles, and how they overcome them. This book is wonderful because it encourages kids to explore the amazing world of creative play themselves, and also (in opposition to one of the reviews) can enrich a class that is learning about Egypt, because who cares about the facts of Egypt, its all about the magic, which these kids are so fascinated with. A must read for kids and anyone who enjoys great kids literature.

highly recommended

I think this is a good book because there is alot of adventure. The book would be diffucult if you are a lower level reader. This book was challenging to me because I don't know much about Egypt yet.It is a good book becuase it makes the kids look like they are going to get in alot of troble but they really dont because the old man is so nice. That is why I recommend The Egypt Game.

on the edge of your seat

The Egypt Game takes place in a large university town in California that is multicultural. This story could take place at any time, even today. It is about April and her adventures as she moves in with her grandmother, leaving behind a life of "glamour and movie stars." She meets a young girl, Melanie, who is the same age as her, who lives in the same apartment complex and also has a vivid imagination.
