Re-read it recently, it's still a classic

I'm a prolific SF and Fantasy reader, and still there are jewels like this masterpiece...

Heinlein manages to write a book that is both a page-turner and inspiring, with some great character development and some nice twists... that reads pretty generic but I really don't want to spoil the book..

Words fail me, go read his :)

Almost a classic

I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book. Heinlein's style is strong, the characters are exciting and the plot is original and fast-paced. The book hits the ground running and it pulls you in further with each new development. It was on its way to being an instant classic for me, then things went downhill quickly when Heinlein's motives for writing the book emerge. While I won't give anything away, suffice it to say that Heinlein uses this story as a platform to push a perverse agenda. The latter 1/4 of the book is very sexual in nature and distateful (I should note at this point that my library only has the complete, uncut version--I imagine the orignal version is cleaner). I found this to be an unfortunate way to end a story that had so much potential. That being said, there are some great moments in this book. I can see where some label this as a classic, but for me it is a book that was on its way to greatness and fell short in the end. I will make it a point to read the original published version, which is what I would recommend to others.

One of the all time greats

Published back in 1961, this is a timeless classic. Heinlein thumbs his
nose at religion, politics, sexual attitudes, and even death itself.

As a work of science fiction, it is a facinating story. Occationally
it bogs down in overly intellectual rants, but overall highly enjoyable.

Heinlein claimed that he was not trying to preach anything, just get
people to think. But this book is loaded with highly spriritual themes.
I grok the insights this book provides.

Entertainment: 5 stars
Enlightenment: 5 stars

If you enjoy reading about the human condition from a non-human perpective, then you might want to read Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit.

A Valentine of a Novel

This true classic has meaning on so many levels; it is science fiction at its best. Interlocking storylines, characters with depth, and hidden messages abound. Many interpretations are possible, equally relevant. I read this book with my roommate as an undergraduate, then again and again, often with my children. Each reading leads to deeper understanding and new discoveries and perceptions. Valentine, my love, you are a part of me.

One of the best American novels of the 20th century

I do not believe I could possibly review a masterpiece of a literary genius that was Heinlein. It is a novel that should be mandatory reading in schools, among the most worthwhile few days of reading one can have. The book classifies as science-fiction in much the same way one would classify Shakespeare's Midsummer's Nights Dream as fantasy.. It is, as usual with Heinlein, the message that matters not the scenography.
Read it, you will enrich yourself. And finally understand that 'grok' word people been throwing around the Internet, since its inception. :)
