Mesmerizing Story of Heartbreaking Tragedy

I worked for the court during the Downs trial, so when I saw Ann Rule attending court for a book she was writing, I was skeptical. For me, the Downs trial was a life-changing experience that shook my foundations. I have to admit that Rule sheds light on Downs' background and what drove her to the attack on her children. In my experience of the trial and the events of the year leading up to it, the book is accurate and an incredibly compelling read. Probably her best book to date. Utterly mesmerizing.

The story that just keeps getting better...

Just when you think you've reached the summit of strangeness, along comes another weird aspect of Ms. Downs' life. This was the first "true crime" novel I've ever read. I not only found it entertaining, but also interesting on so many levels.

I'm sure many guys have dated women like Dianne who may be pathologically possessive, but thankfully, they don't find pregnancy so fullfilling. I still think there are about six different and valid motives for what occurred (if killing children can be explained).

In any case, if you've never read a book like this, go ahead and buy it. Ann Rule's treatment of this chilling crime is like that of an expert journalist. You will be taken into the depths of psychological dysfunction that is exhilerating and in some ways, reassuring.

The best

Small Sacrifices was the first Ann Rule book that I read, and it got me hooked on true crime. Ann is absolutely my favorite author and I believe that I now own every book she's ever published. When asked which of her books I like best, I always have to say it was this one, which launched my true crime passion. One cannot help but compare the story of Diane Downs, to that of Debra Green (Bitter Harvest). Both women killed their children because of men - Diane to try to regain a lost lover, and Debra for revenge against her ex-husband. While both of these women are absolutely despicable, and the horrors that their children suffered unbelievable, it is at least a little easier to comprehend Debra's actions than Diane's. While Debra was a good mother who loved her children very much, Diane was indifferent to her children often leaving them to fend for themselves at very young ages. While Debra's reasoning was clouded by alcohol and medication, Diane was cold-stone sober when she shot her children. Debra has expressed remorse and guilt for her crime; Diane continues to deny responsibility. Read both books; you will want to reach into the pages and protect those innocent children who end up as pawns for their psycho mothers.

A PARTIAL WOMAN

I read this book many years ago, then last week I saw the movie. Ann did an impossible job in showing everyone how this poor excuse of a woman got to the point of shooting her children. What planet did Diane come from? It's almost like Science Fiction. Ann has captured the essence of this creature as no one else could. When I finished this book I had made up my mind that I would read EVERY Ann Rule book I could get my hands on. She is a terrific writer. . the best True Crime from the best author you will ever read.

This is one of her best....

I have read everything Rule has written....

And this was one of the first and what got me hooked into her immediate, detailed and researched writing.

This book is fast paced and riveting....even one who really doesn't enjoy true crime would enjoy this book!

If your new to the genre or Rule....check this one out.
