Climbing Brokeback Mountain

If there ever was going to be a film that would be the most talked about movie for 2005, then Brokeback Mountain certainly did just that. I read the original short story by Annie Proulx before seeing the film. In only being 38 pages long, Annie certainly delivered in using her trade mark short, compact narrative prose. After seeing the film, I eventually bought "Brokeback Mountain - Story to Sceenplay" in order to read the film script in my own time and to better understand what was going on in the film. A lot of people just see BM as a "gay cowboy love story", and in some senses it is. But as Annie Proulx hereself pointed out, its a story about destructive rural homophobia in the American mid-west. The book also enlightens the readers in the struggle to get the screenplay financed and made into the movie, by the essays written by the author and the two screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Here they both explain the initial reluctance to touch the script, knowing how the major film makers probably wouldn't go anywhere near it because of it's "controversial" subject matter. But what is so controversial about it? Only perhaps the right wing religious bigots can answer that one. The book brings together the jigsaw puzzle of emotional unbalance between Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist. The untimely ending of Jack's life in the story might also remind us of the brutal murder of Matthew Sheppard, a young lad from Wyoming who was tied up and beaten to death because of being 'gay'. It's a sad story to think that people are beaten, tortured and killed in the 21st century because of their sexuality. Why does it happen? Because people respond by saying it's wrong to be queer, "'cause the Bible tells us so ...". I hope that Brokeback Mountain will educate many and teach people to be tolerant. After all, love is a human thing, whether to the same sex or the opposite sex. Humanity itself can love one another. When that happens, the world will truly be a better place.

Brilliant Writers

I saw Brokeback Mountain a month ago and have been haunted by the heartbreaking story and Heath Ledger's performance since then. I had to have this 'Story to Screenplay' so that I could get even closer to the characters and writers. The book is more insightful than I dreamed it would be. The short story and essay from Annie Proulx are priceless. I was also grateful to see some of the movie stills are included, especially the shot of the 2 shirts and postcard. This book is my new treasure.

May be a PR Gimmick, but it is a Good One!

Noticing that the 'Brokeback Mountain: Story to Screenplay by Annie Proulx, Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana' was a bonus given free to those who bought the DVD in local stores, this reader picked it up, thinking that even though having the original book/short story was enough, at least the price was right.

But despite the commercialism aspect of this edition, it makes for very interesting reading. Not only is Annie Proulx' original short story included, but the actual screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana is presented in its entirety. For those who have not read screenplays before, this will be an eye-opener. It is interesting to note the manner in which the screenwriters opened up the descriptive passages of the book, a talent that has merits of its own.

To round out the paperback are three essays from each of the three writers adding insights about the adaptation of a story in print into the visual form of a film. It makes for good reading and instructive advice for those who wonder how books ever become movies! Grady Harp, April 06

A Great Read

This volume collects Annie Proulx's short story "Brokeback Mountain" (first published in the New Yorker and collected in her "Close Range: Wyoming Stories"), Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana's screenplay, a short piece called "Getting Movied" by Proulx, and a piece by each screenwriter. As such, it offers good value for money for what you get.
I don't normally buy screenplays, but the film is so beautiful and the adaptation from the story is of such quality that I wanted to own the screenplay. The film is, quite simply, a work of extraordinary genius by a director who is now at the height of his powers. The screenplay, too, is of uncommon quality. You should own this. Simple as that.

Great

The short story is beautifully written. The screen play adds a little more character depth and insight. There are three essays included from the writers which gave behind the scenes insight and I found them all really interesting. I throughly enjoyed all aspects of this book and recommend it for fans of the film.
