The best history book I ever read!!
I think
German
Boy
is a good book. It's not one of those made-up fiction books about
war
- it's a true story. It's for people who like a sad adventure book with a good ending. When I read German Boy I said "I can't stop reading!" I loved the book because the author, Samuel Wolfgang, wrote about what he learned and everything around him, including what he ate and how he felt.
The saddest thing about this book is that many people died, including four of the author's friends and a couple of aunts. The author's mom is very, very sad when her sisters die.

Well written, moving memoir of a German refugee
Very well written page-turner memoir that reads like a novel about a
German refugee
from East Germany making his way with his mother to West Germany and finally the United States. Innumerable books have been written against Germans since World
War
II, which unfortunately have equated Germans with supporters of the political establishment during the war. This account shows that many Germans living in Germany (especially East Germany) suffered during the war and did not support the government at that time. The horrid living conditions, lack of food, and the falling of Wolfgang's mother into periodic prostitution to save her family, combined with the author's gradual realization that God had a part in his survival, can bring tears to even the most stoic readers. Another memoir, by Elizabeth Walter called "Barefoot in the Rubble", although not as well written, presents and even more moving account of displaced Germans living in Yugoslavia following World War II.

Incredible account of survival
Wolfgang Samuel provides a first hand, and often overlooked account of the plight of many
German civilians
as WWII ended. The narrative is extremely well written, and quite frankly, I had a hard time putting the book down. It is a compelling story of survival and the sacrifices of a mother to provide food for her
children under
extremely difficult circumstances. Anyone who is interested in WWII should include this on their reading list.
A great read!
This book was given to me as a gift. Probably the best book I've read all year, and I read a lot.
German
Boy
is very well written in an engaging style. You will see late
war
and post war Germany from the eyes of a 10 year old boy. During his journey through this period he sees the best and worst of humanity and shares his experiences with you in a very clear, yet sensitive way.
Even if you have read many books about WWII, you will learn a lot about what was going on in the lives of the German civilians from 1945-1950. Very hard to put this book down once you start it. If you are looking for a historical page turner, this is it!
