good buy

a thorough book on how to sew. it is coming in very handy.

Helpful reference book

I find this a really handy and useful guide to basic techniques. I've been trying to improve my sewing skills and have found this enormously helpful. The sewing techniques are clearly illustrated with photographs, and an enormous range of things is covered--everything from how to match plaids and stripes when cutting patterns, to how to make a jabot collar.

Beginners with absolutely no sewing experience will probably need more than just this book. It doesn't assume a lot of prior knowledge, but it doesn't go into excruciating detail either. Also, if you want a "project" book, this isn't for you. It will give you knoweldge you can apply to any project of your own, but it doesn't give you sample projects to work on.

Because no technique is covered in extreme detail, one could argue that some things get short shrift. For example, Sandra Betzina's "Power Sewing Step by Step" illustrates a better method for raising or lowering a bust dart, and certainly goes into more specifics about making cuffs. But overall, this an excellent resource that will find many uses in the home sewer's library.

thank you!!

I am a beginning sewer and this book is teaching me everything. I'm getting that new sewing vocabulary and actually feel comfortable enough to start working with a simple pattern! Highly recommend this book to all beginner sewers, it is not too much to take in at all. Great amount of pictures, excellent explanations, love it. I bought this along with "Sewing 101: a Beginner's guide to sewing" and feel I have all the information I need. Happy sewing!

Must have

Not too many books I would be compelled to review but I found this one at a used book store and it is my favorite among all my sewing books! Great color pictures and easy to understand for people that need a hands on approach like me. Its kept me from spending more money taking a class.
Its easy to understand illustrations will pobably take me from basic to making clothes from scratch without a pattern!

if you know nothing about sewing

I have wanted to learn how to sew for sometime. I did not have anyone to teach me, so I bought this book. It has explained a lot of things to me and now I am confortable enough to make clothes from a pattern.
