Peony in Love

I ordered the books - they were delivered on a timely basis - I am happy - as I always am when ordering from Amazon.

Nancy Neyman

Engrossing, Could not put it down

I bought this spur of the moment at an airport. I'm so glad I did. It was such a great story, and so different than any other book I've read.

Love Transcends Even Death

Love transcends even death, and that is exactly what this novel sets out to prove. But this is not just about love, but about the role of women in 17th Century China and the belief systems and superstitions that define this culture. See knows her Chinese customs (another healthy dose of foot-binding rituals to satisfy morbid curiosity) and paints a unique and vivid picture of the afterlife based on these Chinese beliefs. She also grasps a clear understanding about the opera The Peony Pavilion and the other work, the Three Wives' Commentary, featured in this book.

This was a quick read, but not a light-hearted one. Death is the main feature and See draws on this with a haunting quality. The characters aren't the most sympathetic, though. Peony is often foolish and selfish, though she grows and learns throughout. Her mother and grandmother are hardened by their lives, Peony's rival Ze is a spoiled brat (thoroughly frustrating!), and other peripheral characters come off as annoying at times. However, Peony's love, Ren Wu, is the saving grace of this novel. It is easy to see why he was so beloved. His patience and virtue make this book worth reading. It is easy to see how love can make one sick and obsessed, but it is the culture and the attitude toward women that shape the degrees in which women let things like the Peony Pavilion ravage their bodies and souls.
