A Big HOO-YA to Warrior Soul!
I finally read Chuck's book, and I only wish I had read it earlier. We were team mates in the early 1980s at UDT-21/ST-4, and in fact his platoon relieved mine in Beirut. I have probably read just about every book on the
SEAL Teams
written by actual frogs that is out there, and
Warrior
Soul
is now up with the top 2 or 3 covering all eras for its military value. Covering the modern (post Viet Nam) era, there is no SEAL Team book close to Warrior Soul. Yes indeed, it's a terrific book on SEAL training and tactics, and is well worth reading for that reason alone.
But Warrior Soul goes much further beyond being a mere military autobiography. Chuck has laid his soul bare on the pages. I can't begin to think of another military autobiography (or any autobiography) which has come even close in terms of often merciless self-examination. (God knows I wouldn't have the guts to tread there!) This book tells it all, and I can't avoid a cliche here: the good, the bad, and the ugly. This book will move you, and you will not forget the story it tells of the Teams, and you will not forget Chuck Pfarrer the man.
But now I want to tell readers something which Chuck didn't (and couldn't) tell in his own story without sounding self-serving. In the Teams, Chuck was a 250 watt bulb that stood out among a very bright group of guys. He was literally the life of the party where ever he went. He told the funniest jokes, made up the best drinking and running songs, drew the most amazing frogman cartoons. He got everybody stoked, all the time!
Here is one example referenced in the book. The teeth drawn on his platoon's Seafox in Beirut? That was all Chuck. When I saw it, when his platoon arrived and we briefly had two Seafoxes on station in Beirut, I was so mad that none of us had thought of doing it! And it's a tribute to his then-platoon commander Frank (ahem) "Giffland" that he allowed their Seafox to be so decorated.
After Chuck got out of the Teams and went into writing movie screenplays, I was probably the least surprised person in the world. It seemed like a totally natural progression for him. You see, Chuck Pfarrer, when I knew him, was a force of nature, a lightning rod, a fountain of creativity and good humor. Even among that very exceptional group of men called
Navy SEALs
, Chuck stood out, and not only because of his height and red hair!
I wish him victory in meeting all of his challenges, good health, long life, happiness in everything, and continued success in the creative arts.

Pretty good
This is a well written book with good action but lacks anything to make it truly great. For a book about
Navy
Seal
s it is surprisingly filled with long somewhat boring sections. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Seals or other special forces but can't recommend it for the casual reader. I think this book is a little better than the three stars I gave it but I could not bring myself to give it four based on the books ending. Like so many other writers of nonfiction Chuck Pfarrer decides to end his book with his own personal morality lesson with little relevance to the rest of the book.

Great Insight into being a SEAL
Warrior
Soul
is one of the best
Navy
SEAL
memoir
s out on the book market today. Chuck does a great job capturing what it takes to be and live in the SEAL community. The chapter on BUD/S is great and it is amazing that anyone can do the things they do. His chapters on being a SEAL and training for war are insightful. You feel his pain being deployed to Beirut on a vague and ulitmately pointless peacekeeping mission. His SEAL platoon is sorely misused and the daily shelling takes its toll on his soul. Chuck then recounts his journey into SEAL Team Six. Anyone interested in SEALs or Special Operation Forces should read this book. Another book that compliments this is Eric Haney's Inside Delta Force. Read these 2 books back to back and you'll have a great understanding of the 2 most elite military units in the world.

Highly recommended, insightful, well written.
Warrior
Soul will
truly reaffirm every patriotic feeling. Chuck's agility with the English language allows the reader to experience from a unique vantage point what it is like to be in harms way. I enjoyed the opportunity to educate myself further on what occured in past decades with our troops in Beirut. Warrior Soul reads between the lines for you of what it was like. Chuck is not only a Warrior Soul, he is an old soul as well to have had such fortitude.
One of the best I've ever read
Chuck Pfarrer does an amazing job in telling his story (which he was apparently reluctant to write). I had a hard time putting it down and would get down right nasty with my officers when they would call me with radio traffic. I have read numerous books in the military genre and have to say that Chuck's story is without a doubt the best self told story I have ever read. He brings you into his world with amazing clarity, making you feel like you are sitting on the plane getting read for the jump or hunkered down in a bunker eating mre's while Wally shoots around you. His honesty about his feelings for what happened in Beirut and afterwards reminds us how much the men (and woman) of our military go through while we are allowed to sit at home in relative comfort and watch from our t.v.'s as events unfold. Thank you Lt. Pfarrer for taking the time to share with us your story.
