A knitters good friend

I have found this book to be a very helpful sidekick as I learn how to knit & decipher patterns. It is a nice size to tuck into my knitting bag. I refer to it often.

a good start

Well written, excellent diagrams and step-by-step instructions. I have used a few of the different cast-ons with good results.

My only criticism would be there is no information on different selvedges or tips on adapting patterns to use different wool/needles.

As mentioned in other reviews the format is not always easy to find the exact problem you are looking for and I found I needed to read the book cover to cover so I knew what the book did and didn't include. I found I added in things from other books particularly "Simply Fabulous Knitting" to complement this book.

Handy little reference book

This is certainly not the most exciting of knitting books but it is a handy little book for a knitter to have around (at least a beginning one like me) I have consulted it several times on things like how to measure gauge, fixing mistakes, how to knit into the stitch below, etc. It is set up in sections based on skills, like chapter one is casting on and chapter 4 is binding off. In chapter 1, they discuss several different cast on methods with illustrations of how to do them, then they have a common questions and answer sections. For example, in the casting on chapter they ask what is the best cast on for sweaters? For scarves? For socks? etc. They also have a problem solving section that asks questions like what if my cast on is too tight, how can I fix it? This book is a small little book about 4X6 in size and is a great little reference manual.

Outstanding little helper!!!!

Received it last evening and within 5 minutes had the answers to my problems! Spent half an hour reviewing it and love it. Saved $$$$$ on planned lessons. Well worth the expense. Yeah, the binding is stiff, but a spiral would definitely not work in a knitting bag due to snags. Good job author & publisher. Will share with other knitters. Thanks!!

A wonderful, knitting friend

I really love this sweet little book. It really is like having an experience knitter available to answers questions any time you need help. It is written clearly and the illustrations are equally clear. What I find especially helpful is the sections on problems and how to solve them. I have been encouraged to try new techniques just by browsing through this book because it gives you a clear idea of what you are getting yourself into.

The small handbook size is just right for adding it to your knitting bag. The bibliography is extensive and Margaret refers you to books in the bibliography for more information. It is a wonderful starting point for knitters in need of help or information.
