To Repair the World Review

I've spent a lot of time reading in my life and I would have to say that just this short excerpt was more real then anything I've ever read before. It stopped me dead in my tracks to read some of the violence but more then anything it made me stop, think, and consider that these things probably do occur in the war. It was really nice that the author included little personal things about the soldiers and an insight to how they felt not only about themselves but about the war as well. Overall I think this is going to be an amazing book and truely can't wait for it to come out so I can read the whole thing!

very insightful book

This is an excellenty written book about our current crisis in Iraq. The most powerful element of this text for me is the way that the writer is able to bridge the gap between them and us and make me feel as if I were there. Many of the characters of this book remind me deeply of friends that I have gone to school with who are now fighting in Iraq.

A Glimpse into the Gritty Reality of Combat

(Spoiler Warning)

This excerpt is an incisive, galling look into the challenges that soldiers must face preparing for and participating in combat operations. Mr. Ullian describes the interactions among soldiers so well that I can only assume he has served himself, though I don't know this for a fact.

Indeed, I would have never imagined that "action, porn and video games" were used to orient a soldier's state of mind for battle.

It was particularly striking to hear the thoughts, doubts and insecurities of a soldier only to be jolted out of this stream of consciousness by a child tossing a grenade into their vehicle. The ensuing events - violence inflicted by and upon children - is terribly intense and disturbing and reminds us why "war is hell."

There are flaws, however. Immediately after a comrade loses an arm to an explosion, Curtis prattles on (in thought) about broader issues not related directly to the action going on around him. I can't imagine an individual realistically thinking about political issues in the middle of a firefight. In addition, it completely interrupts what should be the climax of this excerpt. Furthermore, the injured soldier and his compatriots are joking about the injury almost immediately after some horrific events - losing a limb and being forced to kill children. However, I haven't been in combat, so I can't imagine how someone reacts to such events. And perhaps Mr. Ullian is recounting things precisely as they happened - I don't know. Nonetheless, a couple paragraphs of "stream of consciousness" thoughts - unrelated to the external drama - seriously interrupt the flow of the story.

In conclusion, this excerpt was most definitely eye-opening, in spite of the structural problems (which could easily be remedied). I thank Mr. Ullian for sharing these difficult events with those of us who can't begin to understand them without stories of this kind.

Interesting read!

My brother-in-law has done three tours with the Marines, and reading this I get the sense that that was how it was like for them. The story seems to capture so many aspects of the war already so early on in the novel. I like the quick pace and the realism, and appreciate that it seems as if you've done your research. The character developement is great right at the beginning, and so far it flows great, seems like it'd be good to read!

Realistic modern war account- Well written- tragic and gruesome

It is nice to see a story involving modern warfare. Without hearing the grisly details it seems people tend to forget what is really happening over there. Nobody likes what is happening over there, but the truth is that events such as this are occuring all the time. The news cannot and will not be able to paint these kind of vivid accounts in the minds of the public, so it's nice that someone can give us a realistic account of what it might be like to actual be a soldier fighting in the war. Referencing musicians that I can relate added a personal tie with the characters. Well written.
