Im Still Trying to Catch my Breath

This is a "can't put it down" read. I am an avid reader but have rarely written an on-line review. But thius is an exceptipon -- a great intricate thriller, well developed and interesting characters and non-stop hair pin turns in the plot. Read it -- if you are a fan of thrillers.it doesn't get any better.

This is a winner

Much better than the last outing. Some updated views of hiding fugitives and the consequences. How come this isn't Jane Whitefield?

Exciting page turner

While his latest books don't come up to the cannot-put-it-down standards of his Edgar winning "The Butcher's Boy," or "Metzger's Dog" or "Big Fish," Perry still keeps the pages turning.

Wendy Harper is your classic innocent victim. Trying to help out a friend, she attracted the attention of a killer and was forced to abandon her settled life and everyone she knew and loved in order to stay alive.

Six years later even the man who helped her do it, retired LAPD detective-turned-PI, Jack Till, doesn't know where she is. But he has to find her before an overzealous DA has her business partner and ex-fiancé, Eric Fuller, convicted of her murder. Till knows Fuller is being framed; he knows the killer has grown frustrated looking for her and has planted evidence to flush Harper out.

Till also knows he'll have hired killers on his tail as he looks for Harper and he does - the narcissistic and insecure Paul and Sylvie Turner. Perry crafts a twisting, turning track-and-chase that keeps Till barely ahead of the ruthless and astute Turners, while the resourceful Harper just eludes his grasp.

Psychological tension, technical expertise and slam-bang action scenes keep the pace up while Perry's characterizations give it some depth. There's an attraction between Till and Harper that goes back to their first meeting and smolders still. And of course there's a bit more to Harper's story than she initially shared.

The Turners - well, even their flaws and insecurities can't rouse any sympathy. However, they are plenty chilling and you can't help but wonder if they'll hold off killing one another in some viciously devious or disastrously impulsive manner until they get to the end of the story.

There are a couple of small holes, but you'll be enjoying the roller coaster ride so much, you'll hardly notice.

One word suffices: great.

Thomas Perry writes terrific thrillers. In "Silence", he outdoes himself.

Paul and Sylvie Turner are your typical husband-and-wife running a home-based business: murder for hire. This time they are retained to murder Wendy Harper, a woman who disappeared six years ago after being beaten and nearly killed.

Wendy's business partner and former lover is arrested for the crime.

Jack Till, former cop and current private eye, helped Wendy disappear six years ago and now he is retained to find her again. Till taught Wendy how to hide. But good detective work prevails and Till picks up Wendy's trail - - - only a step or two ahead of the murderous Mr. and Mrs. Turner.

The story is a true page-turner. As always, the characters Perry creates seem ready to step off the pages into your living room. Even minor characters seem to live and breathe.

The trail runs from - well, I'm not going to spoil it for you. Let me just say there's quite a chase involved with lots of trickery by the good guys and the bad guys. And, as usually happens in a Perry novel, a long line of corpses.

Perry brings things to as conclusion with a series of innovative plot twists.

All in all, "Silence" is simply great. Something every thriller fan will curl up with and not want to let go until the very last word on the very last page. Jack Till is a memorable character, but Paul and Sylvie Turner are evil delights.

"Silence" is Golden

I exerted self-discipline for as long as I could by letting "Silence" sit on my desk. I knew that once I started it, nothing else would capture my attention - my artwork would suffer, my cat family would be neglected, and no one would get supper on time. I was right - when I picked it up, it has been difficult for me to set it down for anything. The character development in this book is incredible - both the good guys and the bad guys. I've always had sympathy for Perry's killers (his antiheroes) as well as for his heroes. This is as true with "Silence" as it was with "Butcher's Boy" and "Sleeping Dogs." Sylvie and Paul are amazing. I am delighted he did not let as much time pass since writing his previous book (the also awesome "Nightlife"). I look forward to Perry's next tome.
