facts or opinions?

The paraphrase of Daniel Moynihan's "you may have your own opinion but you may not have your own set of facts," will prove very useful to the reader. A troubling aspect of this book is how so much of what the author claims could have gotten by the supposedly loyal Bush appointees of Powell, Rice and Rumsfeld. While the book tends to lean towards those who favor conspiracy theories it does provide pertinent facts in the documentation. Conclusions and quotations reached on interviews, is certainly questionable as the author points out page after page of people lying when questioned and especially how their public comments were markedly different from their sworn testimony; especially those of, Drumheller and Wilson. Ample statements indicate that Iraq had chemical and biological weapons prior to March '03 (In December '02, UN Inspectors stated that Iraq had produced 8,000 liters of anthrax but were unable to account for their location) and that caches of anthrax and sarin gas were moved to Syria by plane and truck. This movement is by stated eyewitness accounts and therefore in the question of fact or opinion. An interesting connection is the Jordanian thwarted terrorist attack that netted a cache of chemical weapons (Sarin gas) from Syria. That the two are connected is fact or opinion?

The author raises the point that the Iraqi army dissolved itself, that the commanders of the Iraqi army told their soldiers to change into civilian clothes and go home, despite the repeated warnings broadcast in Arabic that requested the Iraqi soldiers to lay down their arms, remain in uniform and stay in place. Hmm, lemme see, if an army is taking over my country do I want to look like a soldier or a civilian?

Throughout the book you realize that so much of what took place in the first year of the Bush presidency was in place long before he took office. The failure of prior administrations to deal with a mounting terrorist threat is the most damaging. Clearly during the Clinton administration the Al Qaeda threat became known and this was certainly the case made in the Clarke book. However, an omission in the Clarke book is that for the first eight months of the Bush administration key appointments to the depts. of defense, state, etc., were being stalled by congress. Therefore how could the Bush administration have been better prepared for 9/11 when the infrastructure supporting the President were mostly past administration holdovers until congress could approve his new nominees? This may leave you angry or baffled. You may find yourself thinking that an influential portion of our government is more interested in keeping their jobs than serving the people.

Presidential Power versus Entrenched Bureaucrats

Timmerman echoes John Bolton's experience as The United State's Ambassador to the UN. Liberal self aggrandizing bureaucrats work for their own political gains, and no longer promote the ideals of the United State's elected Commander in Chief. If you think we live in a democratic republic that promotes and enforces the will of the people via their elected officials, you must read this book. The need for change is dramatically illustrated by Timmerman's excellent knowledge, research and writing style.

Civil Service takes on new meaning after investigating the influence of political infighting, and blatant disregard for the will and safeguarding of America by the weight of liberal Civil servant's on the government payrolls. In todays political times, they pay homage to their party and ideals, not the will of the majority.

Inside Information

The author obviously has contacts within the CIA to be able to analyze their actions as he does. Very telling of how our own intelligence agency is against our President, and doing all they can to undermine him. Unfortunately, it also bodes ill for our country. If they will do this to one President they will also undermine another they do not like, and it is only to our country's detriment. A good read, and a must read for anyone who cares about this country.
