Great for beginners and intermediates

This is a great book for learning protools. The language is simple and the author goes step by step over most of the functions of the program. She writes plainly using clear illustrated examples. Sometimes it moved a little too slowly for me but I have some experience with multitrack programs. Each exercise builds upon knowledge gained from the previous chapters.

This is for musicians not engineers. She doesnt get bogged down in the details of how or why things work. If you want the details she provides the pages of the manual to nerd out on.

One thing to remember and the author mentions this herself; there are more than one way to do things. She mentions how she prefers to do them and then gives you other options. Listen to her advice but mostly listen to your ears when recording. Some production techniques can mean the difference between Phil Collins and Radiohead, assuming that the Phil results are undesirable.

Bottom line: If you were afraid to learn protools, get this book.

Now I understand.

I am a songwriter/musician who has had protools for 2 years and have not been able to use it. Very frustrating. Tried Protools 101 and others resulting in great frustration. This product teaches me step by step in a way that my mind learns and understands. Thank you. I am unlocking some great music now that protools is becoming a friend.

One of the best instructional books I've ever come across...

I'm normally not inclined to write reviews for these types of books, but this is an exception... This book is amazing and worth every cent.

All of the exercises and chapters are clear and easy to understand (for a program that I don't consider exactly "intuitive" on first glance).

The author writes in such an accessible and friendly manner, and doesn't condescend in any way, or even presume any advanced level of knowledge prior to reading the book. Which is great, considering instructional books tend to be hit or miss in that regard...

Honestly, when I first started using Pro Tools I HATED it, but because of this book I feel much more in control of the software.

I also love the premise of the book and why she said she wrote it. She basically says that it's because musicians shouldn't have to wrestle with technology to make great music. Amen. I'm a usability/user experience guy for my day job, so I couldn't agree more...

Anyway, buy this book over anything else out there. It's more expensive than others (in fact, it's about double the comparable books I considered), but WELL worth the investment.

Just my two cents...

An Excellent Book!

Simply a must have for new Pro Tools users. Very easy to follow the directions and get results quickly. Buy this book!!

EXCELLENT

I am SO PLEASED with this book. I am studying it today and I had to stop and write this review because I am so appreciative of how easy this book makes it to understand things! I have worked with pro tools for years and this book has completly opened my eyes to things I was missing out on! Oh the time I could have saved if I had read this book earlier....... This is BY FARRRRR the best pro tools manual I have ever seen. It's simple, has color illustrations, and gives you excerises to apply what you have learned. Thank you Gina! I am learning things I never knew the software was even capable of!! GREAT BOOK

Ok, I am adding to my review now- it's 2 days later!! I just finished the book. AMAZING. You even learn great ways to name your files and tracks to keep them organized. And i needed that! You also learn where all files are kept, how to back up sessions, burn high quality CD's, add compression to an entire mix, email sessions, cleaning up unused audio regions, etc. I had a little knowledge of this already- but now I REALLY understand it and it will make things SO MUCH EASIER! She also teaches how to use plug-ins in the RIGHT way so it doesn't eat up all your processing power! I also now understand EQ in a much greater way. And i am so excited to finally understand MIDI and will absolutely be working in grid mode from now on. I'm so excited!

Totally worth the money!
