Suess at his best

This is my three year old son's favorite Suess book by far. There are four stories: The Sneetches, Too Many Daves, The Zax and What Was I Afraid Of? They teach valuable lessons regarding tolerance, prejudice, stubborness and fear. Too Many Daves is downright hilarious. You will find yourself laughing with your child reading the ridiculous names Suess has concocted. A must have for any Suess fan, a great introduction if it's your first.

Great story that teaches an important lesson!

I can recall many viewings of "The Sneetches" when I was a young kid, but with age, the movie sort of went away...until 1995, when I was in sixth grade. My teacher suprised us with a movie to show during Social Studies class..."The Sneetches." My class was excited about seeing an old favorite, and while we were entertained, the real reason he showed it was that it provided a lesson--just because you look different on the outside doesn't mean your different on the inside. The story teaches acceptance of those that are different. The Plain-Belly Sneetches wanted stars, b/c they had none. The were looked down upon, and a scam artist decided to help the Plain-Belly Sneetches get the stars they wanted. Not to be outdone, the Star-Belly Sneetches had theirs removed. This resulted in the Sneetches replacing and removing the stars.

It's such a great story. I think everyone should see this in school as a unit on prejudice. I highly recommend this to everyone--except I don't know too many Dr. Suess fans. What a shame!

Pale green pants with nobody inside 'em

When I was a kid, the very last story in this book scared the hell out of me. No, really. It's called "What Was I Afraid Of" and it's about a pair of pale green pants with nobody inside 'em. I spent many nights both horrified and fascinated by that concept. I swear it's why I write the morbid stuff I write today.
Of course, I know now that Seuss was only trying to teach his readers that what we fear are things we don't recognize. Seuss is like that. With his acid trip art and jaunty, rhyming narratives, it's easy to get lost in a story and forget the moral. So much the better.
This book, and others like it, is as much for adults as it is for children. I've bought several copies of "The Sneetches and Other Stories" for nieces and the young children of friends. I do it for the kids, of course, but I always give it another read before handing it over.
Of the Suess books, this is my favorite. Of course, I'm all grown up now. I only think about those pale, green pants in the darkest months when I'm alone and my imagination is particularly Suessified.

Sneetches

Superb Dr. Seuss... I love it and my 4 yr old daughter loves it... Especially the story about the "spooky pale green pants with nobody inside them"... A definite must for the toddler and the "toddler at heart"...

Suess is the legend for a very good reason

If there was a "Greatest Hits" of Suess book, I am sure that the Sneetches would be in it. Great story, with characters that are easily loved and as always, the lesson is not delivered by way of a 2x4 to the noggin. The Zax, well, I think every child should hear this story often and maybe civil lawsuits would decrease. Best of all, I know not to name 23 of anything all Dave. This could probably be a great inspirational message for business settings as well, the allegories are smooth.

This is one of the treasured memories of childhood. If you are kind enough to do special voices for your kiddos like my dad did for us, you will create magic, and life is good, very good, for that moment. Do it for the kids!
