15th entry in series shakes everything up
Dry
Ice
by Stephen White is the 15th book in his Alan Gregory series. Michael McClelland, the bad guy from the first book, has escaped from a mental institution and is after Alan's family. Meanwhile Alan still hasn't recovered from the events of the previous two books, and all of these events are shaking his family in a way that none of them may ever recover from. Add in a secret from Alan's past, and at 402 pages, the book still seems too short. Even if you are a fan of White's previous works, 14 books seems a little long to wait to bring back a villain. Unless you've recently read Priviledged Information (the first book), the events seem distant, and I couldn't remember much of anything about this super-baddie. And White expects you to be familiar with the previous two books in the series including the lackluster Kill Me where Alan barely registered as a cameo. Alan has taken up drinking and distancing himself from wife Lauren. Lauren's hostility toward Alan seems unwarranted and over the top at times, but Alan is keeping lots of secrets in this book, from Lauren and the reader. His near infidelity proves that White is trying to stretch Alan as a character. The mysteries and coincidences keep piling up and make for a quick read. One of the charms of the series is his descriptions of Boulder, Colorado: its scenery and community. White really brings the city alive. I enjoyed this book even with its drawbacks, but the ending through me for a loop. Lauren and Alan's marriage is on the rocks, Alan is still enigmatic, and his best friend, Sam's, act was shocking. It's hard to believe that Sam would do what he did and that Alan would accept it. I'm not sure where White is going next with this series, but he's certainly shaken it up.

Riveting Return
There aren't many authors who would so boldly shake up their cash cow characters as Stephen White does in this novel to Alan Gregory, Sam Purdy, and Lauren Gregory. This book is a grabber and once you pick it up you'll have a hard time putting it down. The twists and revelations revealed in this book are gripping and amazing in that they so much shake up what we thought we knew about everybody in White's world of characters.
I don't want to reveal any more, but heartily recommend this book to anyone who has ever enjoyed one of White's books before. First time readers should order Privileged Information.

Riveting
In this latest Stephen White novel, psychologist Dr. Alan Gregory has to confront his own personal demons along with the breakdown of his personal and professional life due to nemesis, Michael McClelland introduced in his first novel Privileged Information. McClelland has escaped from a mental institution and seeks to destroy everything Gregory hold near and dear. McClelland is working with other inmates that he has befriended in the State Mental Institution. With the help of the Internet, they have learned of old secrets held by Gregory, his prosecutor wife Lauren, and friend Detective Sam Purdy---all instrumental in McClelland's incarceration. He set on vengeance against them all by torturing them with their secrets.
I was riveted this expertly plotted novel from page one. Gregory has always been somewhat of an enigmatic character. His plight created by his long kept secret humanized the stoic Gregory. While the novel was not action based in the truest sense, I couldn't put the book down. Each scene seem to reveal a new twist. I wanted to see where the story went next. Several references were made to the character in the last Stephen White novel of KILL ME in which Gregory only played a peripheral role. First time readers might be a bit lost with the characters that populate the book since White spends little time with the backstories that have been built over the whole of the series. Fans of the series won't be disappointed in another well written and well executed Dr. Gregory novel.

Gets better after the halfway point
Alan's patient was covered in blood in the middle of his waiting room. This scene would raise the pulse of any psychiatrist and immediately he assumes the worst. Come to find out, this was due to a simple nose bleed. It seemed to be a likely explanation, but he should have trusted his initial instinct, as he would soon realize that this was the beginning of his life being turned completely upside down.

and her key grand jury witness has vanished. Alan later finds the witness's purse in his yard, raising questions about his involvement. Then, his best friend (a local cop) informs him that a dark figure from Alan's past has escaped the state mental hospital. Things continue to roll down hill. One event after another follows and Alan finds himself a person of interest in more than one major crime as well as the target for a homicidal maniac he once kept out of jail. The whole time Alan has to do constant battle with secrets, both his own and of those closest to him, in hopes that those secrets won't be used against them with disastrous consequences.
This is a great read. It takes the author a while to set things up, which seems to keep the story at a slow pace at first, but about halfway through things pick up and the book becomes nearly impossible to put down.
