A Classic, Must-Read For Anyone
This book was powerful, and a great ride. This definitely made my all-time top 5 list. You get a vivid picture of what life was like in the old west. Great villains. Tremendous characters. Totally unpredictable. Lots of violence. Seriously could have read another 900 pages. Just a great, great time reading this book. Guess i'm on to Dead Man's Walk, Comanche Moon, and isn't there another? I'm hooked on the old west, what a time, and what great characters. Gus McCrae, I mean...wow.
It's not just a Western or Romance novel
Not a fan of western movies novels.
Not a fan of reading a long romance novel.
This is both of those things and so much more. My friend recommended it to me and I did not think I was going to get any pleasure.
This is now one of my favorite novels ever and when I first read it I couldn't put it down.
I didn't want to sleep. I just wanted to reach the end even though I dreaded the end.
I love everything about it--the plot, the characters, the ending.

The Best of the Best!
For a Western it has very few equals. A long saga, a piece of the american west, told in the almost perfect way this great writer is only capable of. Characters that slowly but surely will grab the attention and scenarios that defy those of an actual movie. There are more pages here to enjoy than the average novel but each page is a masterpiece. Mr. Larry McMurtry was on fire when he wrote this great novel Reading it is like entering a world as real and as gritty as any reality we know, this is the Best of the Best and gladly I give 5 Stars and if there were 6 Stars to give it without a doubt would get them.
Lonesome
Dove
, a western so epic and personal I must have read it over the years more times than I care to claim. Seen it on TV also more times that I can recall, Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones perfect for the part, while everyone else on the series is also worth mentioning! What a Book!

a classic
I grew up reading stories of Winetou and Old Shatterhand, and
in a sense I view this as a version of the same for grown-ups. Although relatively
long,
Lonesome
Dove
is a quick read. The characters memborable, and their
relations are surprisingly complex, as is the structure of the story.
I am certainly looking forward to reading the two prequels, although
I am less enthusiastic about the sequel.
Best book I have ever read!
I picked this up after reading the excellent Across the High
LonesomeThis book
is a sprawling 800 page masterpiece of the West. McMurtry captures the awesome scenery, the wonderful characters, and realistic dialogue. I really can not find any weakness in this novel, in fact I believe it all happened in real life (even though I know its fiction, I want to believe). Oh wait, there is one weakness it had to end! This is one of the few books I wished could just go on and on....
I will be picking up Comanche Moon : A Novel, Streets Of Laredo : A Novel, and Dead Man's Walk : A Noveland hope they contain the same magic. Lonesome
Dove will
be a book I reread more than once, its that good.
