The Boy Who Lost His Face

I particually enjoyed this book. I have read two other books by Louis Sachar (Holes and There's a boy in the girl's bathroom)and this was probabally the best. Louis Sachar is a very good author. This book was funny and realistic. A normal school is very like the one in the story. The language is what people about twelve would use. There is a twist to the story which I enjoyed. I would strongly reccomend this book.

Metacognition

Sachar is a great writer! I had my sixth-grade class read "Holes", which I loved, but a lot of them didn't understand it. This book seems a lot more comprehensible, and I like the vocabulary list that I was making in my mind. "Doppleganger" is a concept my students have already got. David's discussion with his Dad about flipping people off was so excellent. The book needs the gross vocabulary to replace the truly profane and shocking vocabulary students are using. David is always thinking about how he is thinking, and thinking about whether his thinking is influencing his behavior. Metacognition is easiest to teach by example, and this book provides a lot of examples. Thank you Louis Sachar!

The Mysterious Artist

First David and some friends steal Mrs. Bayfields cane. Mrs. Bayfield is an old lady that lives in Davids neighborhood. David likes a girl and they call each other by their last names. David thinks he is cursed because Mrs. Bayfield said Doppel'a'ner so he tries to get the curse off him. If you want to read this book you might want to buy it and see the ending for yourself. The part I liked best about this book is when Davids pants fell down in front of Tori the girl that he likes. Another good thing about the book was his fly was almost always unzipped, which was funny. This is an interesting book for people who like mystery books. It would also be a good book for people who like funny books.
