Very imformative

I read this book and loved the information it has. It is down to earth and open with it's opinions and insights.

a helpful guide

Not every wiccan wants to practice in a group. this book helps the reader along their own path. very clear and concise.

Solitary Wicca

It's a very interesting book, unlike other books I've read the focus is not on being in a Coven, but rather individualized Wicca.

Good introduction to Wicca for the novice

Wicca and neo-Paganism are interesting and relatively recently one hears about them more often. I was intrigued to learn more but did not know where to start.

Scott Cunningham's book served as an excellent introduction. The book summarizes the basic guiding principles and beliefs of Wicca, and provides some historic background from old pagan beliefs. The author truly intended the book for solitary practitioners, so he leaves a lot of leeway for one's interpretation of Wicca and provides some direct examples of rituals from his own practice (e.g. what accessories he uses, what prayers, incantations, etc).

However, the book is only an introduction, and it only begins to scratch the surface. The author hints at that and provides an extensive reading list at the end. Once you know the basics and the terminology, you will want to go online and do more research or read more books. This book teaches you the basic language and concepts so you will know what to look for.

If you decide to learn more, you will see that Cunningham described what is known as ecclectic Wicca, which is different from Gardnerian and other more formalized streams of Wicca. You will also find that there is a fair bit of complexity and controversy around Wicca even within its practitioners, and that some of the basic tenets and history of the belief system are questioned, with reason, by outsiders.

I will not say what I actually think of Wicca - this is a review of the book, not the belief itself. I recommend the book highly if you do not know much about Wicca. If you know a lot or practice it already, the book is most likely going to be boring for you.

A Great Place to Start

This was one of the first books I ever read on Wicca, when I was 17, I'm now in my late 20's and have learned much, and have read many other books, but this is always the one I suggest when curious people ask what they should read. Why? Cunningham's style is clear and concise, and has a loving and respectful tone, while not sounding too flowery or preachy. Yes this book leaves things out, but it's a great guide for beginners. Check out his reading list in the back. I've read most of these books and they've been incredibly helpful in my path. I still refer to this book from time to time, and I can't imagine my wiccan bookcase without it.
