A globe-spanning military memoir
"
Warrior
Soul
: The
Memoir
of a
Navy
SEAL
," by Chuck Pfarrer, takes the reader into the world of the U.S. Navy's special warfare community: "the smallest and most elite special operations force in the United States military" (ix). Pfarrer also notes that the acronym "SEAL" stands for the elements in which he and his sailors were trained to operate: sea, air, and land.
Pfarrer's story has a truly global scope, moving from the States to Lebanon, Europe, and Central America. He vividly describes the rigors of SEAL training and the high-adrenaline missions he took on afterwards. Along the way are some colorful portraits of SEALs he knew, including those who mentored him. Particularly powerful is Pfarrer's account of his tour in Lebanon in 1983, during which a devastating attack was unleashed on U.S. forces.
Pfarrer writes about the particular mystique and distinctive qualities of the SEAL community. He discusses SEAL encounters and collaborations with foreign military forces all over the world. Also intriguing are his descriptions of SEAL relationships with other communities within the U.S. military--Marines, surface warfare sailors, Army paratrooper instructors, etc. He also doesn't shy away from discussing problems within the SEAL world or the toll this demanding life can have on people.
At over 400 pages, this is a substantial text. But despite its length, it's a lean and polished work. Pfarrer fills the book with just the right amount of technical and tactical details--enough to complement the human story without overwhelming it. His prose is vigorous, flavorful, and solid, with an occasional satiric edge which I found most refreshing. "Warrior Soul" is truly an outstanding American military memoir.

Fast paced and interesting
A fascinating book. It keeps you interested with facts and insights about operations and actions of our military. In particular the chapters about the Marine barracks tragedy in Beirut and how it could, and should have been avoided. This book is better than Rogue
Warrior
and thats saying something.

A Thoroughly fascinating read!
This is not a great book...it is a great, GREAT, book!
Well written, insightful and brutally honest
I don't often write reviews, especially about topics I don't have personal experience. But I can't say how much I enjoyed the book. Enjoyed is not the right word, because it is not a gung-ho, steriod pumped hollywood version. It was honest - fear and confusion were not omitted. The description of Beirut gave me a better understanding and respect for the Marines and sailors who served there. As a side note, Lt. Pharrer had a humanities degree and experience as a political speech writer before the
Navy
- combined with his experience gave him a unique ability to write the account. If for no other reason than to honor the servicemen who fought a battle few people understood or appreciate I recommend you read this book.

This is an awesome book!
This is an awesome book! Very reader friendly. I finished it a month ago, and it still has me in it's grasp. This is way above the average 'ex-military guy writes his book' novel. I strongly believe this is because Mr. Pfarrer was an acomplished screenwriter before he ever wrote his novel. He was able to tell his story the way he wanted to and not how a ghostwriter thought he should. Mr. Pfarrer writes with candor about what he went through to become a
SEAL
. He speaks about what his team did to survive in Beruit. He tells about the WAR waged against 'peacekeepers' for six very long months before the Marine barricks were bombed. He is honest about his role in the covert war in Central America during the 1980's. The book is focused on his team's achievments not on how great he was as an individual. I very much appreciated his honesty about how he treated the women in his life during these years. It is not often a man is this honest about his faults. I also liked that he kept the technical guy stuff about weapons to a minium, this made the book much more readable for me.
