Bill Bennett is Amazing
This book is a must in my opinion. I think that every student in
America should
have to read this at some point during their education. It allows History to escape
from
the drudgery of textbook pages and adds a reality and an excitement to the founding of our great nation- along with facts and stories that most people have never heard. Thank you so much, Bill Bennett!!!
An interesting and insightful book. When your ready to learn American history on your own, this book is for you!
I generally don't base my initial reviews of a book on other people's reviews, but I could not help but notice a certain trend among the negative appraisals of "
America
: The
Last
Best
Hope
."
It seems that the 1- and 2-star reviews of this book are completely unfounded. Most seem to come
from
a preconceived notion of the author, and sadly not the book itself. The others rely on historical minutiae that escape most generalized histories anyway. Finally, there are reviews that label the book "racist," I looked for overt racism in this book and found absolutely none. I can only surmise that any negative reviewers just skimmed the book so fast, they missed Bennett's faithful attempt to show America as a human nation, capable of mistakes, but not inherently wicked, as were so accustomed to hearing.
I don't listen to author William Bennett's radio program, in fact, this is the first of his books I have read. Bennett has done an excellent job summing up the history of the Unites States. Where most studies still hold on to divide American history at Reconstruction, Bennett has encompassed the periods from Discovery to the doorstep of WWI.
Bennett's writing style is clear and rarely bogs down. Unlike most history texts, "America: ..." reads as a well as any first-rate narrative. I certainly remember these topics from high school and college, but I took so much more from Bennett's book than I ever did from any class.
Bennett maintains that there is no question that in 231 years America has made some mistakes. But I must add that if we held the nation to the same standard as its people, perhaps we could learn to be a bit more forgiving. I guarantee that if any citizen lived over 200 years they would have some regrets. In my 31 years, I've certainly had my share, who hasn`t? I don't know when it was that America became so critical of itself, but we need to understand that despite our errors of the past, we are truly the
World
's last best hope.

Thorough Survey of American History
Bennett succeeds in his intention to provide a streamlined overview of
America
n History
from Discovery
to WWI. The gems of the book are the accounts of the role of the Founding Fathers and the accounts of the Civil
War
. The thread of history mainly focuses on the country's leadership struggles and international and civil conflicts.
I think Bennett offers an objective look at American History offering differing perspectives and truths about successes and failures of the early and growing country.
The scope of the book does not allow Bennett to dwell long on particular events, as he moves swiftly through time painting the big picture with some tangents into incidents and events. In this respect, it is less intensive that books like "1776" or "Mayflower" that focus on a brief event or period of time. This book will spark your interest in some of these topics for further reading.
This is educational and entertaining. I was impressed again with the caliber of men and women that have shaped this country. Bennett has done readers a great service by this offering of American history.

Made History interesting for a techie
This the first book on history that I have read cover to cover. Ever. It took the names/dates/places memorized in dry history courses years ago and breathed life into the events and characters. I especially enjoyed the little insights sprinkled throughout that drew connections to things we take for granted today. It's not "in depth", but that only encouraged me to dig into some other books for details and other perspectives. I couldn't wait to get the second
volume
so I could find out what happens next!
Congratulations! You made history interesting to a confirmed "techie".

Bought as a gift for m,y son
Bennett is a smart guy and I listen to his show daily. Bought the book for my son who is in law school. Typical kid, no feedback, but I'm sure it's a good read.
