300 Crochet Stitches (Harmony Guide Vol. 6)

This is a reprint of The Harmony Guide to Crochet Stitches. Volumes 1-5 are all about knitting; volumes 6 & 7 are the crochet instructions. This has to be one of the most useful crochet books I have ever encountered. Volumes 6 & 7 together show you how to do basic stitches, laces, clusters, filet, shells, bobbles, loops, edgings & trimmings, some Irish crochet, various "motif" patterns, and Tunisian (Afghan) crochet stitches. The photos and diagrams are all in full color and the explanations are the best I have ever seen. Truly, they are worth every penny! If you can only get 2 books on crochet, get these.

Good for designers

This starts out with the basic sc, dc, tr, hdc stitches, but then goes on to show how to get LOADS of effects using crochet stitches. It has the following chapters: basic stitches, clusters, textured stitches, spikes, relief patterns, puff stitches, knobbles and bobbles, patterns for texture and color, filet crochet, openwork and lace patterns, motifs, edgings and trimmings, and tunisian crochet. The motifs are great for granny squares. This is a good book if you want to design your own afghans or clothing.

300 Crochet Stitches

As a budding crochet designer I found this book very helpful. I bought a book called No Pattern Sweater Crochet at geezer.com and used 300 Crochet Stitches almost exclusively when making several sweaters. The 2 books compliment each other very well, and I've also used 300 Crochet stitches in several other designs. I found 300 Crochet Stitches very easy to understand and well illustrated.

A Must-Have!

Positively grand array of stitches! This is a must-have for the serious crocheter, especially for those who are venturing into designing their own crocheted items. This superb collection, all presented in full color, are exquisite, and far more beautiful than any I have seen. The instructions are excellent. Each stitch comes complete with diagrams and multiples of chains necessary to make the stitches.

Looking through this book, I can envision lovely crocheted garments such as cardigans, jackets, tops, shawls, etc., as the stitches here would doubtless match any lovely knitted stitch that exists. In this book, the following chapters are:

Introduction - gives basic crochet instructions (how to hold the hook, making crochet fabric, changing colors, etc.)

Basic stitches - lets you explore how each sc, hdc, dc, and tr work

Variations - basically lets you see how different and beautiful the effects would be if you fish your hook in the different loops of each preceding row

Clusters - about 10 nice stitches that are suitable for making solid fabrics

Textured Stitches - an absolutely lovely collection of stitches that make you want to grab your hook and start working on a piece right away

Spikes - another striking collection of stitches that are so beautifully photographed, you can almost feel the textures!

Relief and Puff - like the "Spikes" chapter, you continue to look at the pictures here as though you're actually holding the finished fabric in your hand

Knobbles and Bobbles; Patterns for Texture and Color - the stitches in these two chapters continue to be so stunning you'll wonder if these are actually possible to work those with crochet (and they actually are!)

Filet - shows charts for the alphabet, among others

Openwork and Lace Patterns - another display of exquisite stitches that sets your creative juices running

Motifs - shows beautiful medallions that are not found anywhere

Edgings and Trimmings - all very lovely and uniquely beautiful

Tunisian Crochet - stitches you wouldn't expect done in the usual Tunisian manner

Now, GO BUY this book!

Excellent illustrated basics, plus easy-to-understand graphs

This is an excellent reference book and a tool to design your own creations. After several years of neglecting crochet, I began again and was having trouble with an afghan--keeping the stitch count consistent from row to row. Somehow I was inadvertently increasing or decreasing stitches and it was wrecking havoc on the design. I was so frustrated that I was ready to go back into crochet retirement again! As a last resort (should have been my first), I referred to the illustrations in the 300 Crochet Stitches book and discovered my error in turning the rows. I'm hooked--so to speak!
