Excellent resource

I homeschool a 4th grader and am using this book for the first time. I have found that the content is child-friendly, Christian based, and easily understood. The history is told in a narrative format, making it feel more like a story than a dry history book. I have been an educator in the traditional school system, as well as a college professor, and believe that this is a useful resource for any adult wishing to share history in a positive way.

Fabulous way to teach history!

I've used this curriculum for home-schooling students and it is just such a fabulous, comprehensive resource. I even recommend using this book as a supplement for social studies programs. Learning through stories helps children connect to the information, visualize the events, and actually remember the information. I have even learned so much more myself by using this book. You could even read it as bedtime stories if your children are particularily inclined to history!

The best narrative of ancient history for younger children...

This book does exactly what it says it does... cover world history(certainly focused more on the classical west)in a way that is engaging to a young child. While older children are welcome to listen in, it really is pitched right at young elementary students. Story of the World is a read-aloud for most 1st graders, not a picture book, and though the chapters are quite short the expectation is that kids have developed some listening skills already through listening to other read-alouds. Older children and stronger readers can easily tackle it themselves. Yes, in some cases there are generalities rather than specifics, but rather than quibble over historical debates about whether or not Alexander was truly "great", celebrate the fact that your first grader knows who Alexander the Great was!

We are halfway through our 1st grade year using Story of the World as a history text, and yesterday my son built a seige engine for Ashurbanipal out of Legos. He's 5, and he knows more about ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia than the average American adult--heck, when's the last time you could locate Mohenjo Daro on a map? I couldn't until we covered that chapter! If you are using Story of the World for homeschooling or afterschooling, I highly recommend the available Activity Guide, which has enhanced our experience.

I'd say this book is a great success that completes an admirable mission--bringing a clear, simplified and engaging overview of world history to early elementary children. It has made history a favorite subject around here, and greatly enriched the imaginative life of my children.

First Grade History

I can not say enough about Susan Wise Bauer! After reading her book The Well Trained Mind (EXCELLENT RESOURCE AS WELL)I knew that I wanted to follow her approach to teaching history in my home-school. She has made it easy. I would encourage anyone to use this book in conjunction with the companion Workbook as they really are designed to go together. The Workbook spells out the best way to use the book and is an incredible reference center to do further exploration. I am looking forward to the next 3 years in her history course as well!
