Very swashbuckling

I liked the novel (I listened to it on audiobook). I didn't give a "love it" rating as I enjoyed Allende's Daughter of Fortune better. But this was a very light-hearted adventure story in a time and place when everything was very very bad (just look at Goya's works to see that). I also liked that it covered an era in history that I knew little about (Spanish colonization and role in the Napoleanic Wars). It was a modern dime novel and I enjoyed it for its light heartedness and the fact that nobody dies.

Zorro as literature? Who knew?

Isabel Allende's Zorro is a thrilling biography of a fictional character. With her descriptive prose, she brings the legendary hero to life, literally, as she recounts his birth and childhood in California--long before the day he dons the mask for the first time. As the reader follows Diego De La Vega across the seas, one can't help but get caught up in the gripping plot that drives De La Vega's desire for revenge and justice. Fun and adventurous without being cliche or overly romanticized. The period, though not necessarily Allende's writing, remind me of The Count of Monte Cristo or The Three Musketeers by Dumas. Definitely recommended for fans of Allende!

Another good Allende story...

If you love Isabelle Allende, you'll like reading this, the "true legend of Zorro." As with all stories, Allende unapologetically weaves magic and mysticism throughout her characters lives. It's always those characters that understand and use their intuition, like Zorro and his mild-brother Bernardo, who have the greatest advantage in Allende's stories. This is mostly a charming tale of how a young, privileged, mischievous boy grew into a legend and a hero in his own community. It is not her best story, but it is easy to read and, as with all her books, it is beautifully written. One word of caution ... this book comes in Spanish or English. Pay close attention to the language of the book before you order.

A Biography of Zorro

This light read will bring you to a world similar to that of "The Three Musketeers." Although fictional, Zorro's biography makes for a fun story.

Zorro

I have never been disappointed by Isabel Allende and she has once again supplied just the right amount of entertainment and historical facts to keep me interested.
