Another Winner from Thomas Perry
Thomas Perry's writing continues to be a treat to read. Well crafted characters, a compelling plot and first rate story telling continue to be a winning combination for this author.
Others have set out the story line quite well and I agree with those that found the Turners, the husband and wife hit team, to be far more intriguing than the subjects of their hunt, Jack Till and Wendy Harper.
There is enough left untold at the end of the book to make one wonder if we might find one or both couples in another installment. Probably not, but you never know with Perry.
This is much more than a beach read. It is a fine book to tackle at any time.

The usual disturbing formula
Silence
follows Thomas Perry's usual plotline: a good, innocent (but lucky) person has escaped from an evil villain and gone into hiding. Now, the person has been found or needs to be found and must thwart the evil villain at last. It's a good formula that keeps the reader involved from start to finish. The villain and his henchmen are always killers with no conscience and a little bit crazy to boot. The good person always has help from a cynical but kind expert on staying alive. This formula worked particularly well in the Jane Whitefield novels until she got married and ruined the premise. It works very well in this novel also.
But I find that I don't take the same enjoyment from these novels that I did in the early days of Jane Whitefield. Few of the characters feel any genuine human emotion: they all manipulate each other and view life as a vast chess game with all the real kindness and spontaneity removed. Although it's a very good book, well-plotted and well-written, I think I'll skip the next one and move on to authors with less cynical views of the world.

Great suspense up to the very end
Thomas Perry has a wonderful, very human hero in Jack Till. The ins and outs of his locating Wendy, whom he taught how to hide 6 years before, are true to life. The story gets more complicated with a married pair of assassins whom we shouldn't like but, because of their own human traits, grow on the reader. Lots of people end up dead! The author flushes out the characters so that they are more than one dimensional, like the killers who love to dance. Great book!
Hard to put down!
I haven't read any of Perry's earlier novels, but
Silence
is a terrific page-turner. Each character is distinctly drawn, the plot imaginative and riveting. HIs attention to detail makes the story come alive. Although more than 400 pages, I read it in three days.

The Turners Steal the Show
I have read several other Thomas Perry books and he is a first rate mystery writer. In
Silence which
is summarized by other reviewers he tells a tight story that moves forward quickly. It is a long chase book with flashbacks that help understand the characters. This is an effective technique.
I found the hero Jack Till and the Wendy Harper interesting but not compelling. The most interesting characters in the book are the Turners. It is unusual for the professional killers to be the most interesting characters. This is very similar to Butcher Boy which is a superior effort.
Perry is worth continuing to read.
