An Afternoon Well Spent

I got Cold Tangerines in the mail from a friend two days ago and sat down to read for twenty minutes. Six hours later--and after migrations from my favorite comfy chair to the kitchen table to the car (not the safest way to read, admittedly) to my bed--I closed the book and felt just as embraced and understood and satisfied with the ride as I was terrifically annoyed that it was over.

Shauna's entries made me grin that knowing grin I grin when I read my own past journals. The sordid and the splendid kind of collide, and although some of the memories and realities are hard to face, they remain my memories, my realities. Her style has that quality--the "resonance" thing that will frustrate you by what you see in the mirrors she holds up as much as it delights you. I hope it's the first of many more books from Shauna.

What I should have said

I started reading this book one night before bed as I often do, It was one of those books, you know the kind that keeps you up so much later than you should be, the kind you just don't want to put down.
I love the stories, the honesty, the humor. This is an author I want to take out to lunch, I want to get to know her, I want to know how she knows me so well. So many of the points illustrated are things I should have written, if I could write that is.
I think everyone will love this book, I know I sure do.

Cold Tangerines

It has been a long time since I've been moved by a book in such an all-encompassing way. Author Shauna Niequist's book delivers a powerful and poignant description of life as she knows it...which looks a lot like life as we all know it. She bravely and honestly shares with us her prophetic voice, reminding us and revealing to us the beauty and depth in our everyday lives. This book elevated my mind and spirit and showed me a profound way to observe the world around me. I absolutely recommend it and plan to give copies to friends and family this holiday season!

I need to read more books like this...

A book like Cold Tangerines lifts my spirits - and as a fellow Michigander, I completely relate to Shauna's quest for celebration in a world that can be gray and cold (for six months at a time). It's a relatively quick read - her personal stories and real honesty about her life, stumbles and all - are inspiring and compelling. Now, time for a glass of champagne and a piece of cake!

Cold tangerines is a well written book that allows the reader the privilege of seeing the world as Shauna Niequist sees it. i love books that let you feel apart of the authors journey and this book does that extrodinarily well. Like donald miller does in Blue like jazz, this book is laced with humor and a fresh take on spirituality that makes you want to live the best kind of life.
