Excellent

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The characters are some of the best I've had the pleasure to meet in fiction -- not because they are sympathetic or admirable but because Franzen made them real.

Don't approach this book looking for a tension filled plot. Instead: laugh, cry, question and ponder each character's inner faults and foibles. Come to understand that we all carry our flaws in self-conscious cases that we unsuccessfully try to hide and rarely resolve with the right corrections.

And so the hype was because....

I still can't figure out what the buzz was all about (besides the O brouhaha). I could connect with Gary, Chip, and Denise on some level (must be the middle age hurdles and Philly/NY elements). But I could hardly champion them. Every time the plot rambled on about the patent, Alfred's slow demise, or some pathetic turn of a relationship-gone-bad, I wished I knew how to speed-read. I think there's literary merit in the novel, but it's too overdrawn and shoots into too many directions. I wouldn't prefer root canal to reading this (as one reviewer suggested), but I would've liked a stronger focus.

Talk about DRAMA!

A real page turner! I can't remember the last time I've enjoyed reading a book like The Corrections! Jonathan Frazen is up there with John Steinbeck's East of Eden and Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain. Talk about superb writing! A beautiful masterpiece! I couldn't wait to get home from work/school to continue reading The Corrections! It found myself reading in the middle of the night when I had to be at work at 8:00AM!

J. Franzen is brilliant. His description of the Lambert family is so vividly colorful, ro richly depicted that it gives the book a humanly touch! I fel;t like I was a part of the Lambert family. I really felt engaged with the characters. The Corrections gives a sense of normalcy to all the (dys)functional families out there. You will find yourself celebrate with Denise, cry with Enid, yell with Gary, wanting desperatly to make (some) CORRECTIONS with Albert and running away all the way to Eastern Europe with Chip...
