Pre-historic native American murder mystery

People of the Mist is a departure for the Gears, if only because it is a pre-historic N.A. murder mystery, complete with a garrolous old investigator (the Panther). While enjoying the who-done-it nature of the story, you incidentally learn a great deal about Algonquian customs (i.e., the uncle has responsibility for raising the children, not the father; women--not men--inherit property; and so forth). So, who killed Red Knot? Highly recommended.

I started and finished it the same day!!!!!

I could'nt put it down.Ithought I had it figured out,but was wrong. Loved the story.I've read all the series and loved this one the best!! Can't wait for the next one!!The Gears are byfar most the best writters on early american history!!

review of "People of the Mist"

I just finished reading the book People of the Mist by the Gears today. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed the eight that came before it. This however was a bit differnet from the others, being that it was more focused on regular people as opposed to a dreamer or shaman. Also, it had more of an element of mystery in it than did its predicessors. I really enjoyed not knowing who actually killed Red Knot, but being filled in on the facts allowed me to produce my own theories. The Panther is a character you can relate to in ways and sympathise with. Sun Conch is the character I liked alot. I felt sorry for her situation, loving someone she could not marry and dishonering herself and her clan. High Fox struck me as an annoying coward from the start and I can't help but feel that it wasn't worth Sun Conch's body and soul to try to clear his name. This book goes by quickly and I was sad when I was done with it. I personaly can not wait until their next book, People of the Mask, comes out. If you have not read this book I highly recommend it, but before you read it, read the first eight if you have not. Those eight being People of the Wolf, People of the Fire, People of the Earth, People of the River, People of the Sea, People of the Lakes, People of the Lightning, and People of the Silence. If anyone out there reading this likes these books as much as I do please e mail me.
