Best of the series
I have read almost all of this series (I am currently reading
People
of the Masks) and this one is the best of all. I have read it through twice and referred back to favourite parts numerous times. The characters are fascinating and the story is one that draws you in and won't let you go! I love historical fiction and this is one of my favourite series, up there with Jean Auel(Clan of the Cave BEar, et al.) A must read--as is the whole series. If you only read one, read this one!
This book was well written and with a lot of thought.
The Gears have taken us all over the
North American
continent and now we are at the Great
Lakes
. The Gears have a way with words and this book is no exception. The gears make us almost believe that we are there with them by their use of imagery and their knowledge of the time. Having the Gears be archelogists makes the difference between a writter and an excellent writer of the time.
People
of the Lakes is one of their best ever.

Don't be intimidated by its size!
When I
first picked
this book up I thought, "Holy cow, it's going to take me all summer to read this." But after the first chapter I was hooked, and I finished it in less than two weeks. Once again the Gear's savory writing style and intense plot had enveloped me. This elegantly-crafted story is filled with friendship, humor, and emotional intensity. There is a good balance of inner and outer journeys for the characters. The reader is transported into another time and place, and it's so real you can almost taste the berries and smell the trees. I have read several of the Gear's other novels in this series and this is my favorite one so far. Highly recomended for historical fiction buffs and lovers of Native American culture!

Excellent As Expected!
The Gears have done it again...well written fiction, yet based on archeological findings, i.e, how they lived, how they dressed, what they ate, etc. It places the reader back in time and rewards with a suspenseful tale of long-ago Native American life, love and survival.
