One of the good ones
I almost blew by reviewing this book because at the time of this writing, there were 362 reviews of McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize winning novel - 321 of them Five Star. But how could I pass up my favorite novel? So, now there are 322 Five Star reviews.
Lonesome
Dove
is a rarity: a great book and a great film. McMurtry's novels, especially this one, have great characterization, a sense of realism that few writers can achieve, and they invariably tell a hell of a good story.
John Wayne once said, ""Don't even for a minute make the mistake of looking down your nose at Westerns. They're art - the good ones, I mean." Lonesome Dove qualifies as one of "the good ones."

Absolutely magnificent
A phenomenal achievement,
Lonesome
Dove could
well be considered the Great American Novel. Part road trip, part character study, this amazing novel should be on everyone's reading list!
Mr. McMurtry has succeeded admirably in creating a cast of characters that any writer could be proud of, and especially of absolutely nailing a complex relationship between the two principle characters. In August McCrae and Captain Woodrow Call, McMurtry has gifted us with two of the best and most complete characters ever written, let alone loosed upon the Western landscape. Add to them a host of other rich characters, and an understanding of the trials and dangers of a complete north-to-south transverse of America, and you've got Lonesome Dove.
Desperately moving, though often humorous, this is American writing at its very best. Despite its length, it's a quick read. That's probably true because, as other reviewers here have said, once you begin this beautiful book it will accompany you everywhere you go until it's finished.

Read this book with caution...
because every other book you read after it will come up short. I've been reading fiction my whole life, and I've never read a novel where I became so involved with the characters and invested in the story. I really envy people who are just reading it for the first time, and I recommend it to everyone- you will too, just wait...Absolutely the best book I've ever read.
Very Enjoyable
I had recently rented the
Lonesome
Dove
movie, and decided to read the book. I was most pleasantly surprised at how the movie adaptation was so close to the actual story as told in the book. This, in my experience, is very rare.
The book is beautifully written and at the end, left me wondering what would become of the remaining characters. So, it seemed the sensible thing to do was to also order "Streets of Laredo" so I could find out.
All said, a wonderful read.

WOW!
I give this novel away as a gift to as many people as I think will read it. It is fantastic and was one of those that I couldn't put down. Mr. McMurtry has a humorous way of storytelling and bringing his characters to life; however, his work is deeply touching and sometimes disturbing as well. This is a book that everyone should experience.
