An excellent book for the "Lost Child"

This book was recommended to me by my therapist due to the similarity in the story to my real life. Having been the "Lost Child" in a family where my father was obsessed with his workplace and hidden in the shadow of a superstar brother of only 13 months older I could truly relate to the life that Mr. Hickam led.

It is a very quick read and is exceptionally entertaining. It gave me some solace in knowing that my situation is not unique and success can follow in the life of the boy who doesn't follow the path of his father and excels inspite of living in the shadows.

Excellent story. Thank you Mr. Hickam for sharing it with me.

October Sky: A Memior

Homer Hickam wrote from his heart of a time in the late 1950's that made me remember when community was engaged in caring and participating in an awareness of its youth's needs and dreams. It made me smile, laugh out loud, and even shed a tear. Hickam's writing style makes for a delightful read, rich in descriptions and emtions of high school kids with resourcefulness and hope in their hearts. Besides the memior of Homer and his friends'adventures in rocketry, it tells of the life of a coal mining town in the mountains of West Virginia.

October Sky

The book I am writing about is October Sky, an autobiography by Homer H.

Hickam JR. Homer lived in a struggling coal-mining town in West Virginia

Named CoalWood. In 1957 when Sputnik soared over Coal Wood, Homer was inspired by this

event and decided to build a rocket of his own. One of the many things I enjoyed about this book

Are the characters. Although the story is told from the prospective of Homer, all of the

characters are uniquely developed and interesting. The story flows very well, it's almost hard to

believe that this was someone's child hood. As serious as the book is, it is also very humorous

with Homers description of his home life, and many failed attempts at rocketry. The book is

meaningful as it shows the struggles and hardships everyone had to face at that time. Everyone is

against his endeavors but towards the end, friends, teachers, and even his own family step in to

support his work. When I read this book I was surprised by how well it was written, and

everything is well organized and put together. The book sticks to the story very well, the author

doesn't go off on unrelated topics or tangents, but follows the story with a predetermined path.

The book is inspiring at the very least, although the book is fairly short as well as an easy read, it

is powerful and moving.

Out of this world!

Homer Hickam's Rocket Boys is the first memoir I have read - and I thought it was great. Very easy read - finished in a few nights because I couldn't put it down.

Hickam describes his childhood adventures and boyhood friends in the poor coal mining town of Coalwood, WV. He uses details in such a way that they are interesting, provacative and key to understanding the era in which he lived. I find some authors throw in too many non-critical details that the story is bogged down and boring. Not Hickam.

Knowing everything written was true made the book very enjoyable. Fiction is great, but I could picture the life of someone who not only existed, but excelled and went on to great things. Good inspiration.

I would recommend this book to middle school and above. It's a non-fiction book which isn't boring and makes you glad you invested your time.
