This is an amazing book.
Karen Fisher's A
SUDDEN
COUNTRY
is a book about traveling the Oregon Trail. The year is 1847. The story Fisher tells is as raw and brutal as the challenge that her motley group of pioneers has undertaken - that of moving their families and possessions from Independence, Missouri across the Rocky Mountains to Fort Vancouver in Oregon, and of staying alive. The wilderness she describes is breathtaking. The rhythm of her prose and the dialogue of her characters is perfect both for the period and to conjure the lurching movement of an ox-drawn wagontrain, for the stresses that are endured and the struggles the pioneers experience as they grow and change, as, mile after mile, we travel with them. As even the land itself unfolds. This is an epic journey of privation and quiet triumphs, a tale of trappers and men and the bravery of mothers and their children. It is a story inspired by Karen Fisher's great-grandmother's grandmother, Emma Ruth.
If you enjoyed reading Cold Mountain, I suggest that you will love this book. I can thoroughly recommend it.

A Poetic Western Voice
A
Sudden
Country
is a rare, poetic
novel
. It deserves to stand on the shelf next to Doig and Stegner for its authentic western voice. Karen Fisher's eye for detail stands second only to her keen understanding of horses and human nature as it was upon a time, taking the reader into frontiers of perseverance, responsibility, determination, and liberation without redemption.I was caught up in the novel from the first lines and was delighted again and again by the choice of single words, by the texture of the lines. It is certainly not a love story, though some reviewers want to reduce it to such.It is a human story, as each of us must learn to live with the choices we make.

Savor this Book
Most times, I devour books. With so little free time and even less patience, I read as though the book were a Thanksgiving meal: the table set, the guests seated, the dishes that required hours to prepare, consumed in mere minutes. That is the expectation; that is the result.
Not so with Karen Fisher's A
Sudden
Country
. No, this is a
novel
to be savored.
I found myself putting it down after several pages, careful to conserve the gorgeous phrasing that made me wonder how long; was it a day, a week for Ms. Fisher to compose that sentence? It isn't often a writer is able to blend a satisfying story with such sumptuous writing, but she does.
Last night, I reached the climax. I stopped, counted forty pages, and considered putting it down. Oh, how I wish I had. Now I'm left hungry, knowing it will be some time before Karen Fisher prepares another book. So, until then, I'm left remembering.

American literature
Karen Fisher's A
Sudden
Country
opens in an imagistic blur of grief and disorientation, travels through a journey of gritty versimilitude and the pain of loss and longing, and ends with the unutterable yearning of the human heart as it struggles to find peace within itself. Along the way, the passions of love, betrayal, jealousy, and raw fear are examined in rich language that recalls Louise Erdrich, Barbara Kingsolver, Cormac MaCarthy, and the wild yet always apt similes of Eudora Welty.
Despite its literary trappings, A Sudden Country commands the reader's attention with a compelling and dramatic narrative, the story of a band of pioneers on the Oregon Trail. Using a powerful female perspective and the backdrop of one of this country's great migrations, Karen Fisher has created in this, her first
novel
, a work of enduring literature.
