Third in series - a cross-cultural imprinting

This story follows very much the style and form of the previous two in the series, "Jacob" and "Gideon". It focuses on the Demons, one of the groups of Nightwalkers (various creatures that go Bump In The Night like Vampires, Lycanthropes and the Demons, powerful supernatural beings) and in this story on the chief Warrior demon, Elijah, whose history includes being the warrior who killed the King of the Lycanthropes fourteen years ago.

Unfortunately as the story starts Elijah has been cornered by his enemies and seriously wounded. Just before he's finished off by Ruth and Mary, the former Demons who have now turned evil, those attacking him are frightened away by the call of a wild cat - a Cougar. That animal is the Queen of the Lycanthropes, Siena, whose rule for the last fourteen years since the death of her father has done a great deal to build bridges of peace with the Demons and the Vampires. Siena herself, rather in the manner of Queen Elizabeth I, has decided to stay a virgin so that she doesn't have to share her throne with a man who might drag the Pride back into war. The nature of being a Lycanthrope Queen means that if she mates with anyone that mating bond is for life.

Siena hasn't realised, however, the powerful pull of attraction she will feel when taking care of an almost-dead Elijah. She takes him to safey in a cave but they are trapped there for several days and despite the fact that they are from different species and the Demon Lore forbids any relationships between Demon and Lycanthrope, rather inevitably they find themselves unable to hold back their lusts. When they separate to go back to their individual lives there is clear evidence that there was more to this 'one off' mating than either of them imagined.

Their attempts to stay apart or to find a way of dissolving the Imprinting bond take their attention away from the fight against Mary and Ruth but soon all the Demons, as well as some of the other Nightwalkers, find themselves fighting for their lives.

As with the other books this is written in a lush style which is easy to read. However, also like the other books, the actual plot is rather thin and it seems that the characters spend quite a lot of time thinking or talking or faffing amongst themselves rather than doing anything (and the stuff they're doing doesn't really add to the sense of character for them, either). I was also a little disappointed that more wasn't made of the cross-cultural problem; for Elijah his mating with Siena breaks thousand year taboos (maybe like humans mating with chimps?) and for Siena to ally herself with a race that had been at war with hers for 300 years, not least that her mate is the man who killed her father, is a huge step and yet this all seems swept under the carpet remarkably easily. I had hoped for far more exploration of what this might mean to the individuals involved, the hostility they might face, and yet there was almost none.

Still this is a reasonable enough read in the genre with lots of input from the heroes and heroines of the previous novels as well as some likely new plot lines for future books. Those who enjoyed the others should like this one, others starting with this book should enjoy it but with some reservations.

Just great! Loved Elijah!!

I have read all three stories and this is my favorite!! I finished the book last night and just loved it. Elijah has a perfect blend of sex, violence, humor, drama and mystery.

The sex was hotter then a remember the first two books being. I like it hot, so it was great!!

Siena is a great addition, such a strong female. Elijah needed an equal and she meet him right in the middle. I really loved this stroy and can't wait to read more.

I'm so looking foward to Noah and his story. That Demon King is hard up!!!lol

Who Knew Demons Were Hot???

This series just keeps on getting better and better. I won't go into plot detail here, but I loved the plot, the interaction between Elijah and Siena, the conflict due to imprinting between the two and the outside conflict with the necromancers. I definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it.

Pure Animal Attraction Keeps Frank's Nightwalker Series Sizzling!

Chemistry is King and Fate has a sense of humor, as Lycanthrope Queen Siena, finds her destined mate in the most feared former enemy of her people, Elijah, the 'Demon Butcher.'

Queen Siena drives off the evil Necromancers just as they are about to deliver the killing blow to a mortally wounded Elijah. Since Elijah is in Lycanthrope territory Siena decides to save his life in order to preserve the fragile peace between their formerly warring people. She uses her magic to stabilize his injury and the incredible strength of her were-form to get them to shelter from the sun which is harmful to all Nightwalker species in order to protect Elijah's fragile hold on life. Elijah is too weak to leave and Siena is committed to staying and nursing him back to health, but as soon as Elijah begins to gain some strength the pair begins to experience an undeniable attraction. If you have read the previous books you are familiar with Demon Imprinting which is a bonding on more levels than just soul mate, it is mental and emotional but more primal and irresistible.

Siena and Elijah both have reasons why they shouldn't succumb to the sensual pull between them. For Elijah mating outside his species is prohibited and punishable by death. For a royal lycanthrope any mating is for life and Siena doesn't intend to ever share her throne with a man after the years of war and strife caused by the last lycanthrope king, Siena's father. But Siena convinces herself that since Elijah is demon the one time mating rule doesn't apply and though Elijah tries to be noble and resist her lure, her seduction combined with the imprinting pheromones soon overcome his resistance. When Siena makes it clear to Elijah that she doesn't intend to continue the relationship, the pair separate and then both suffer anguish at their separation.

One of the things that makes these books so enjoyable is that the author Jacquelyn Franks does such a good job of breathing life into her characters. Siena and Elijah are so well drawn that you feel their pain and frustration as they deal with a situation that is beyond their control. Adding an extra dimension to the story are characters returning from the previous books: demon mates Gideon and Legna (Gideon (The Nightwalkers, Book 2)), enforcers Jacob and Isabella (Jacob (The Nightwalkers, Book 1)) and demon King Noah as well as other members from the supporting cast that Franks carries through all her books. Isabella, Jacob's mate from the first book, continues to grow in power, more elements of the prophecy are introduced, and the villainous Ruth curses the children of the prophecy. Other than this the background plot is a bit thin, but it does serve to give the supporting characters something to do and it gives the romantic leads a reason to get out of the bedroom for awhile.

The only problem I had with the book is that Siena was a much more interesting and powerful character before the imprinting. Afterward she is emotional mess and much less controlled. Even when she accepts Elijah, their bond causes her to act without the careful thought and control that made her such a successful queen, acting in a way that nearly costs her her life. Hopefully Syreena, Siena's sister, fairs better when she takes her turn in the spotlight in the next book, because so far she is a fascinating character. Can't wait to read about Syreena and vampire king Damien in the fouth book Damien due out in June.
