Incredibly, wonderfully good

Not being someone who is easily moved, I could never have anticipated the effect this book would have on me.
I stayed up two nights in a row until 3AM to finish it. I almost literally could not put it down.

Randy Alcorn follows an interesting style of interweaving numerous facts about how God is moving in China and the nation and culture itself with the storyline. The story was relentlessly compelling, the characters were incredibly real, and the perspective changes between earth and heaven were unique and dangerously joyful.

Be careful reading this, it -will- change your life. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone, I thank God that I read it, and plan on circulating my copy as much as possible.

GREAT!!!!!!!!!

This is the best Christian ficition book that I have read. I am not typically a fan of Christian ficition but this book grabbed my attention after the first page. I could not put this book down. The first time I read this book, I was in a country where Christians are persecuted for this faith. That experience just made this book come alive to me. I wish I could find more books like this one. I recommend this book to any adult Christian. This is a must read!

Never safe with Alcorn, yet somehow secure!

Wow! Randy Alcorn has once again shocked me. His writing never fails to send shivers down my spine. The title simply states, "Safely Home". Hey, if you've ever read Alcorn, he dares to get a little dangerous, and he challenges YOU, the reader, to experience total security with a Heavenly Father who fits the bill. I seem to always have a lingering question when I read Randy Alcorn: Why does it always take me so long to finish what he writes? I think I take that extra time because I know if I go too fast, I'll miss something awesome!! Our awesome God made Randy Alcorn an awesome writer! THAT is why he's up there with Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti. No other reason, except to give glory to God.

So, next to the title is Chinese writing, right? Is it just something cheesy, or is this something rather serious?! Expect a lot more than just a simple reunion of Ben Fielding and Li Quan, ok? Don't simply expect the obvious. You can tell that Ben Fielding expected a lot more when he visited Li Quan, his old college room mate. He never expected him to be satisfied with just a simple shack, yet he never knew that he would become unnerved during his visit to China. You realize that Quan, although he never became the professor he wanted to be, has a lot to teach Ben about Yesu, or Jesus. When you read this, look for word pictures, and don't try and finish it too fast. You will get somewhat of a history of Chairman Mao, and how even though he had his plans, God had His plans as well. Just like Pharaoh, what was intended for evil, God used for good!

The work of Randy Alcorn was never meant to be just raced through, (burp) good book, and then put it back on the shelf. It was meant to be pondered over, it was meant to be cried over, and it was meant to rejoice over! I believe that. It was also meant to be passed on. This is a witnessing tool for Christ, and you don't just keep something like this to yourself. No way. This was incredible! It had quite the explosive ending. And I'm not talking about some stupid big bang either! Now, YOU read it and find out. Thank you, Randy!

Best Fiction I've Read

Safely Home was a great read. It challenged me, instructed me, opened my eyes, and awakened passion. The God-centeredness of Alcorn's message was refreshing. You will enjoy this intellectually and at your heart level as well. On par, though quite different, with C.S. Lewis in the Narnia Series.

First-rate, read at your peril

Lord, make me what You will
I put myself fully in your hands
Put me to doing, put me to suffering
Let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you
Let me be full, let me be empty
Let me have all things, let me have nothing
I freely and with a willing heart
Give it all to your pleasure and disposal. Amen.

Reading "Safely Home" reminded me of this prayer. At church, the pastors give us the option of whether or not to recite it - as one might imagine, it is a "dangerous" prayer, because God could take our word for it, and "put us to suffering", or "lay us aside", or "let me have nothing"!
The story of Li Quan and the Chinese church seems very much like that. Though he topped his Harvard class, could have eked out a very comfortable existence in the US or China (as an atheist), he professes his faith at his job interviews and fails to land any job that pays well. In China, there is a real price to pay as a child of God, again, a reminder that the "middle class" Christianity we think is normal is not normal at all in some countries.
I finished this book in 2 days, couldn't put it down at all, cried at parts, and will now be buying copies to give away. It is one of the most transformational books I've read! It's making me re-examine my life in the light of eternity. Martyrdom is a big theme throughout the book, and while most of us would not be called upon to lay down our lives for God, nevertheless, if He should, are we willing? In short, Safely Home is sobering, uplifting and inspirational all at once. Highly recommended!
