Fast-pace, Suspenseful, at the same time, Cute

This book is not for techies only as I thought before. It's like a "modern" Romeo and Julie. Set in high-tech industry, the book opened up with the discovery of a body. A body that belongs to a Stanford researcher, at the same time crowds of medical personnel waited for him to speak about his research. After the discovery of his body, his laptop was found missing--at the same time, his daughter was preparing for her wedding. Another tragedy--was that the wife of the researcher was kidnapped. The suspects were....the great visionary who worked with the protagonist (Joanne), Joanne's cohort (Stephan) who was making all these changes in him, but the evidence were strong on Jocobsen (a doctor with whom Joanne was falling in love and who saved her life). Just when I was suspicious of Tilton, he died on a plane crash. The "who" and "why" were revealed at the very end....a very unexpected one. What I like most about this story are the characters. Joanne is the epitome of the women of this century. Her problems are real, her weaknesses and strength are real, many can relate to her. Jacobsen was a typical compassionate doctor (at least in front of his patients). Carrie Lapore--we have many of them and so is Tilton--a smart but emotionally corrupt one!

Cold Eyes kept me reading. It had many unpredictable twists and turns that will leave you breathless. I was up all night reading this book. It was that gripping. I look forward to reading more of Wilcox's books.

Cyber Murder

A body washed up on the shore. A love lost and still longed for. A few highly intelligent individuals hold extraordinary knowledge about computers and electronics. A group of characters with secrets they dare not reveal. A love yet to be won.

In the very middle of this constellation of data, yet to be information, is Joanne Gravitz. Joanne is a software developer and adroit in the use of Cold Eyes, software that helps track computer hackers. The body on the beach is but the beginning of a chain of events that will involve hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of people. For an unfortunate few, the chain of events may lead to the last moments of their life. Only one person stands between the progenitor of the chain of events and the next victim of the chain: Joanne Gravitz.

Romina Wilcox has crafted a marvelous thriller that contains elements of cyberpunk. Romina first introduces her characters. Then she begins to feed you pieces of information about each of the characters, but just enough to keep you wondering who the criminal is. Romina also does sneaky things by having things happen to the characters I thought were the criminal to prove they were not the criminal, but I still wondered whether Romina was pulling a fast one (she does). Regardless of whether you guess the ending of this book, an honest person will have to admit that it was a guess. Throughout the book, Romina injects significant knowledge of computers and software, knowledge that is key to the success of Cyber God and the reason I claim that this book contains elements of cyberpunk.

I loved this book and found myself glued to the last 100 pages. However, I have a few, small complaints.

The story started very slowly, and though the slow start helped build up the backgrounds of the characters to permit Romina's clever mis-directions, the slower pace required a bit of enthusiasm to get through. I think it helps if you like computers and software.

My second complaint regards the dialogue, about which I have two complaints. First, some of the dialogue bordered on being unrealistic. I suppose unrealistic dialogue tends to be a hallmark of new writers. You should read some of the dialogue I have written! Second, the dialogue had a definite female slant in it, particularly in the first half of the book, regardless of whether the speaker was female or male. I also notice that Romina spent more time describing things like relationships, outfits and makeup than a male author would have. Even so, men who enjoy action and mystery stories should enjoy this book as much as women - though they may learn a few things about style and relationships along the way.

I have read very few stories where knowledge of electronics and computer hacking have been credibly written about. Once Philip K. Dick wrote "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and William Gibson wrote "Neuromancer," books such as "Cold Eyes" were inevitable, once the right author set pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard. Movies such as "Enemy of the State" and "The Net" also cover aspects of cyberpunk and cyber criminals, regardless of whether the criminals are in our government or freelance. Romina Wilcox has captured cyberpunk in a novel that could take place today, tomorrow or next week, and used it as a basis to create a convincing murder mystery that will delight even jaded murder mystery fans. I think that you will suddenly find yourself speeding to the end of this mystery as you wonder how Romina managed to keep you from figuring out who the murderer is, while she is actually holding him or her in your face the whole time. Romina has a joke at our expense and for our enjoyment. Relish the moment and the experience and hope for another novel from Romina that is at least as good as this one.

This review is based on a copy of the book provided to me by the author.

Enjoy!

A Must Read For Anyone Who Loves Suspense!!!

This Is A Great book from cover to cover. I could not put it down. I never saw the ending coming. Great job for a first book Ms. Wilcox, I believe it was better than most of the seasoned writers.
Keep up the good work!! I am looking forward to more from you in the future.

Very Clever

I seldom read novels, but this one is very hard to put down. I like the characters particularly the protagonist, Joanne Gravitz. Her problems are very real. I can totally relate. The plot is very dynamic, lots of twist and turns. From the mysterious death of the world renowned researcher, to the kidnapping of his widow, the wedding of the daughter, plane sabotage, computer hacking, fast cars, Cold Eyes has it all! I can't wait for Romina's next novel.

Great break out novel

Romina Wilcox has done a great job. Set in the heart of Silicon Valley, this technical thriller intertwines the biomedical research world and that of information and software technology. Of course, the violent crime and utter brutality will leave you breathless.

Joanne Gravitz is a software and anti-hacking wizard working for a firm called Omegasoft. A local Stanford physician-scientist is murdered on the eve before his release of information concerning his research on a cure for HIV. With thousands waiting for his conference, he is found murdered at the base of a roadside cliff. Suspects include other physicians, hacking wizards etc. A couple of sleep-deprived, hard-nosed FBI agents play major roles. Agents Maloney and Hendrix come to life in the pages of this thriller.

Full of twists and turns, the motive and perpetrator are eventually revealed in an action packed climax. Many die, identities are stolen and relationships are on edge as Romina unwinds the scandal before your eyes.

I'm looking forward to her next novel. If you enjoy Dan Brown's style, this book will leave you hungry for more.
