Difficult subject made easy

Quite possibly the most readable computer book I've read; packed with the information that you need and omitting information that you don't. There are exercises in each chapter that reinforce the ideas presented. I can't say enough about this book. In the future, I will read Troelsen's books on computer subjects first.

great Book

I had no previous knowledge of ATL or Com before I read the book. After reading the book, I feel confident that I can/have developed basic programs using COM and ATL. It has turned out to be a very good foundation builder..

Simply put, Toelsen is the Petzold of ATL.

At first, when I read this book I had absolutely no knowledge about COM (minus VB's implementation); However, the book itself was so thorough in explaining the basic concepts of COM from the ground up that it didn't matter--it explained COM in the best detail I've ever seen in any book. The author explained things so well, in fact, that I was able to start working with COM libraries (such as ADO) within just a few days of reading the book! I remembered looking at ATL code just a few days before I read this book, and I said, "I can't read this at all!" Almost about a week later, after reading the book, I looked at that same chunk of code, and to my sheer amazement, it made perfect sense.

This one is DEFINITELY a keeper, right up there with Jeff Prosise for MFC, and Petzold for Win32. This is the best ATL/COM book I have read, hands down.

The best book for learning or sharpening COM skills

I spent (...) one week throughly reading the book from page 1 to page 686 page, playing with lab code and I finally graduated as a COM guru :) Well, though much of this is because of my work experience I think this book totally worth the money and time I spent on. I once attended a 1-week training session paid by employer (over 4 grands I guess) but I think this book can achieve much better results provided the reader is really willing to sit down to read throught the book, understand the basic C++ and practice the labs often. Also reading the book is quite enjoyable and the author tours readers through the topic and then digs into the essentials and then follows some quite nice labs. After all, this is the best COM book I have readed and maybe the one of the few best computer books in the bookstore. I am expecting the author's next book (COM+)

This one never makes it back to the shelf!

Not just the basics, yet not bogged down in detail. This one is just right. Andrew Troelsen does an exceptional job of balancing the theory of COM with the practice of ATL. Thorough explanations and real-world examples, thoughtful organization, and attention-holding narratives make this the only COM book you'll ever need.
