Amazing

The soundtrack to MYST was very different than this one. MYST had a very bold sound to it. On the other side this one is very relaxing, soothing, and great for going to sleep to. A definite 5 star.

Depressive, encouraging and breathtaking

This CD is awesome. Since playing the game for a while, i wondered if it had a soundtrack. I found the music when playing the game, very moody and mystical. But when playing it on my stereo... I found other, deeper, more emotional parts, with a lot of feeling and thought. Tracks like "Survey Island Theme" and "Fissure" are just plain beautiful. "Gateroom" and "Boat ride" set you in a moody feeling. "Whark Room" will send you to the stars and back. Great CD while relaxing, painting, preforming your favourite hobby. Also if you are in a bad mood, it's easy to regain strengh, from this particular CD. Robyn Miller at his best. I don't have the Myst Soundtrack, but when playing Myst, compared to when playing Riven, The music has developed far more than the first game. The best alternative music. This CD can never be too expensive.

Beautiful, relaxing, and engrossing.

I'm almost embarrassed by how much I enjoy this music. Whether I want to sit back, unwind with a drink after a long day at work, and just absorb the beautiful sounds, or whether I need background music that will allow me to relax and concentrate on a new project, this music works. It's beautiful, relaxing, and engrossing.

It's also a wonderful way to renew, continue, and extend your experience with the game after you've worked completely through it three or four times. As an added bonus, the packaging has high production values, so you get a cool CD case, useful and interesting liner notes, and beautiful illustrations that complement and deepen the game.

But the music stands on its own apart from the game. If you enjoy music that will let you momentarily drift away to beautiful, distant worlds, you will love this soundtrack.

When I listened to RIVEN for the first time

I was amazed how very different it is from it's sister soundtrack MYST. In MYST, there are several different themes placed perfectly throughout the game that appear on this disk. There are bizarre drum solos, ambiant piano, and loud strings. I was, needless to say, a bit dissapointed with RIVEN's discontinued likeliness. Instead of loud, welcoming music, I was greeted at first by a strange 11 second sound effect of a porthole opening followed by a series of monotone bass noises accompanied by scarce sound effects. We are then presented not with a sountrack but rather a continues "meditation music" companion. Though I have not played the game, Robyn's strangly restrained music seems misplaced in a game of (correct me if I'm wrong)many different worlds. It's almost as if Miller were making it up as he goes; trying his best to engross us in the content by stretching a long, monotonous tone. He, unfortunatly, fails. We are presented with a piece of music barely audible at times. The only track on the disk of any real engrossing music is a superb track entitled CATHERINE'S FREEDOM. This starts off very mono (how illplaced!), however speeds up to a very well paced construction illustrating a picture very clearly. If you'll notice, none of these comments were necessarily bad (thus the 4-star rating). The music, as I have read, and I agree, is excellent by which to read, write, and relax with. It provides a soft, gentle sound that soothes, and gives off a vibe unmatched in splendor and beauty.

An aged soundtrack, but still top notch.

I played through Myst and bought the soundtrack. Then came Riven, which I actually did not play. I merely bought the soundtrack. Even if you haven't played this game, if you enjoy new age music and ambience, this is a soundtrack you should pick up. It's brooding, relaxing and thoughtful.
