Crooked Little Vein

dark, and twisted and absolutely hilarious. Very good book for anyonewho digs Ellis's comic work

Short but Sublime

Crooked Little Vein took me just under 3 hours to finish off, and I'm no speed reader. That said, it was an excellent 3 hours. Those of us who spend way too much time on the internet will find a great deal of Mr. Ellis' source material familiar, which I think is really cool. This book is weird people, weird events, weird sex, and a weird little love story - I highly recommend it to the tolerant and the secretly curious.

And I thought his comics were great...

"Crooked Little Vein" is what I would call a justifying novel; the entire detective genre exists to allow a work like this to be produced. This reads like something Joe Lansdale might write, if he weren't so shy and inhibited. (If that sentence doesn't scare you, you need to get out more.) Ellis is already one of our greatest graphic novelists; here he proves he doesn't need the graphics. Great stuff.

10,000 Words on a Theme

Warren Ellis has a way with words, that much has to be admitted and that's one of the best things about this book. It grabs you and pulls you through to the last page just because you want to see if the nastier side of America wins in the end.

There are some rather questionable items in this book and several things that make your stomach turn. Warren Ellis himself gave 10,000 words to his literary agent to make her stop bugging her and it's fairly easy to see which ten thousand. But that said, the one redeeming feature of the underside of societies vices is the fact that the main character is almost more disgusted at it than the reader.

But all things weighed, I liked it. It's very much along the lines of Transmetropolitan, so if you liked Spider Jerusalem, you'll love this.

Crooked but worth it

In the style of Neil Gaiman, Simon Green and a little Chuck Palanik thrown in, Warren Ellis's book "Crooked Little Vein" will make you laugh out loud and, at times, be very distrubed at the imagery he conjurs. And yet, it keeps readers reading all the same clutched in sick facination.

Michael McGill is a down n' out private detective who takes the cases no-one else would. Falling in a pile of shit and, well, falling right into another. He is on a case after an artifact to change the american lifestyle, meeting an array of characters so uniquely wrong that they make this novel brilliant.

For fans of any of his graphic novels and readers who want something just a little off to the left of normal. Warren Ellis makes America look crooked. Just the way it is meant to be.
