Desperate housewives who read ........

I really liked this book. It's gossipy, trashy at times, and it's sort of fun to read. I found myself very interested in the characters lives and could see how the author tried to make these women easy to relate to. Many of the situations covered are situations that I see happening among my married friends. I liked the fact that the book wasn't so much about the actual reading group rather what goes on outside of it and how those pieces forge friendships over time. Honestly, I didn't read the book to find out about reading groups. If I wanted to know what a reading group was like then I'd join one! I saw a fair amount of reviews that commented on the amount of characters as being confusing. I could see their point. The author could have easily cut 2-3 characters out and it would not have made a difference. Additionally, I thought that the storyline with Clare and Cressida was a wee bit obvious. I guessed it early on and I feel that it could have been done better - less typical if you will. I also see that a lot of reviewers commented on the authors own marital situation - many were miffed that she is married to someone in the publishing world. Hmmmm.. I just don't think that's very fair. People aren't mad at Mariah Carey for having once been wed to Tommy Matolla (like taht's the only reason she has a music career) and I think it's along those lines. I feel the author has talent and a pulse on what women today find interesting. Women shouldn't be so catty in response to that.

Solid chick-lit

This book is solid British chick-lit for the crowd who is a little older than the Jane Green fans may be. It was interesting enough to keep me entertained on a boring business trip and plane ride, but overall not a big intellectual thrill. The list of books that the club read, the little descriptions, and their discussions of the books gave me a few good ideas of books to read (some classic). I would have liked the book discussions to be a little longer, and segue into their personal dramas a little more cleverly.

Engrossing - Better than a TV Soap Opera

Elizabeth Noble is a former British publisher who came up with a very interesting concept for a novel. The Reading Group is an addictive literary work. As I'm reading about all of the different characters in the book club and their life experiences and struggles, I find myself thinking it is better than a soap opera and can't wait for the next installment. Perhaps the author should become a soap opera writer, she'd be great at it.

Make sure you carve out time in your schedule to finish this book in one sitting. You will not want to put it down. It's the perfect read now that The OC is in hiatus.

I have read almost all of the novels these characters discuss in their book club on the exception of Ian McEwan's Atonement. The author made this novel sound so interesting in her characters' book club descriptions that I actually went to the bookstore and bought it.

After you finish this book, I would suggest that you read all of the novels the book group discusses throughout the book. Her suggestions are 100 times better than those Oprah Winfrey features on her talkshow. Perhaps Oprah should have Elizabeth Noble choose her O Book Club suggestions.

Buy this book. You will LOVE it.
