Simply irresistible
Kudos to Kim Harrison! She has done amazing things in this
book
. If you have been following this series (and what kind of dweeb starts with Book Six ??) Congratulations, sport! You just won the lottery (not really ...) BUT you are in for a treat when you start this reading this one. (Warning - once you start- be prepared to put your everyday life on hold until you finish reading the last page.) I finally finished about 6 AM. Yes - Even though I needed mondo coffee and toothpicks to keep my eyes open in afternoon clinic. It was worth it.
The old gang is all here, but a few new characters like Bis the gargoyle insinuate themselves effortlessly into the roiling, fast paced narrative with entertaining results. The Harrison signature oddball off-beat humor and interesting character insights are here in spades. We learn more about Trent, Ceri, Quen and yes-even Takada! She has developed her characters and propelled her plot with unexpected changes and some really harrowing moments. Short summary you will love it. So? What are you waiting for? Anyone rooting for a one night stand between Rachel and Trent?!
I loved this
book
! I agree with some of the other reviewers that it got off to a slow start with
Rachel mourning
the loss of Kisten. Personally I did not really like him anyway. The book really takes off about 1/3 of the way into it and from then on it's non stop action and excitement.
The Pros:
I love the interplay between Rachel and Trent. I was totally surprised to find out the father of Ceri's baby! Learning more about Rachel's background was great. This twist took me completely by surprise.
The cons:
I am over Kisten and I hope Rachel gets over him too. Marshall is way too dull for Rachel. The thing between Rachel and Ivy needs to end, I am tired of the repetition of bascially a different variant of the same scene in each of the books where Ivy hungers for Rachel, and Rachel wants to yield.
This series is inventive, engaging, and fast moving with a story line full of twists and tiurns that will have you gasping for more. I think the strongest scenes involve interactions between Rachel and the
demon
s and Rachel and Trent. I would love to see Rachel and Trent hook up and then wake up the next morning and start bickering all over again!
I loved this book and can't wait for the next book in the series. Definetly worth the hardcover price.

Good action scenes but much of the same-old, same-old
This installment in the series, like others before it, tends to rely on two elements to hold the reader's attention: lots of action scenes where
Rachel's life
is threatened and the reveal of a new talent in Rachel's magic arsenal. Harrison delivers on these two mainstays as always.
Where the novel falls flat for me, however, is the emergence of a trend in Harrison's last three novels: 1) Rachel's ongoing game of "will she, won't she let Ivy bite her?" and 2) Harrison's characterization of Trent Kalamack, who is turning out to be the wimpiest elf I've ever had the misfortune to read about.
Here's the rub: why make Rachel best friends with the second most powerful vampire in the city, if said vampire is always missing in action when Rachel's life is threatened? (Ivy's scenes consist of her holding her stomach, making coffee or working on her computer.) And why make Trent the most feared power in the city, yet make him continuously have to seek Rachel's protection? The worst part is that in the first novel of the series, Harrison made Trent as ruthless and seductive as any well-written master vampire. But by the third novel of this series, she had begun emasculating him and in this novel, he's no more threatening than a member of the F.I.B. or your local politician.
I enjoy the series but no way am I paying hardcover prices for the next one. And if Harrison doesn't resolve the Ivy dilemma and bring Trent back to his origins, I'll be getting them from my library.
