LOVE/ HATE RELATIONSHIP

I loved and hated this book at the same time and if it was possible I would've given 3.5 stars because I don't quite feel it deserves 4 stars. I'll start with the good. As with most books by EJD this book had more than enough twists and turns to keep the reader on edge. For example when Destiny went on her mission of revenge I felt myself gasping a little wondering if she was going to be killed. Also EJD's writing style is fun and entertaining as usual. Now onto the bad which for me unfortunately weighed out the good. This book had absolutely no likeable characters and this made it difficult to enjoy and really get into. At times, I found myself not really caring what happened to any of them and just wishng they would all die. Billie was like an overgrown child, her lover was selfish and spineless, Destiny (who I liked the most) seemed like just another teen acting out for attention, and Carmen was just down right pathetic. Also I didn't understand why Marcel was given so much time as he really brought nothing to the story. Another problem I had was the whole motorcycle theme. At first it seemd to give Billie a youthful engergy, but after a while I really became frustrated with portions discussing the various motorcycles and motorcycle gangs. It grew a bit annoying for lack of a better word. Lastly, I feel that in this book EJD went out of his way to make everything come together at the end, to a point where it was just a bit unrealisitc. With Billie giving her friend the DVD (w/ what on it I won't say) and Marcel's cousin being who she was(once again I wont say), I felt that everything in a way worked out too well and it seemed fairly unrealistic that everyone's lives were so closely intertwined. But maybe for whatever reason, that was the point. For me it was fairly reminiscent of Crash a movie I did not at all enjoy. Still it may seem hard to believe but I did somewhat enjoy the plot and I would recommend this book just not as a first choice for someone trying out EJD.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!

I LOVEDDDDDDDDDD this book! The only thing I'm mad about is that I borrowed it from my Aunt and I had to give the damn thing back! [...]So I'm gonna go and buy it soon, IN hardback because it's worth it! Billie is just one of the best characters I've read about in so long, matter of fact, Eric Jerome Dickey characters are some of the most memorable characters in a lot of African-American fiction books I've ever read. I love this guy as a writer because there's substance involved especially among so many other trashy African-American books out there. This book was just so great! Action, heartbreak, problems, problems, problems. And Destiny is a trip herself! I hoped for Billie to get with Raheem (SP) but just lingering that bit hope just... aghhhh... great job. [...]

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE...

Job well done! Loved this book from start to finish (2 days). Simply could not put this one down, without having to pick it back up, in order to find out what was going to happen next.

Although we would love to believe that some of the material is too far fetched to be true, out in the mean streets of society today, these things (and things far worse) ARE going on. Many notes to be taken, and lessons to be learned here. Don't sleep on this one......Can't wait to see if the story of Destiny, Billie, Carmen, Keith and all the others will be continued in future books!

Would definitely recommend to others!

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Fast and Furious

Married for 18 years, Keith and Carmen are separated and have filed for divorce. Seeing Keith with his girlfriend, Billie, on a date invoked feelings of rage in Carmen. She decides she wants her family back together. Carmen is able to convince her attorney to devise terms of the divorce that will leave Keith penniless. Realizing his back is against the wall, Keith agrees to end the divorce proceedings and move back home. He meets Billie to let her know his decision and learns she is pregnant with his child. This begins the wild ride that is CHASING DESTINY.

As Carmen is struggling to pull her family back together, Destiny is acting out. In her quest to fit in with a group of friends, she gets involved with the wrong crowd. After a series of events with her newfound friends, Destiny finds herself exploited. She extracts her own vengeance on those who wronged her, setting off a domino effect of dramatic situations. Billie is also experiencing her own drama; someone is trying to harm her and her unborn child.

The plot in CHASING DESTINY is driven by the constant antics of the characters. There are so many high intensity moments readers can exhaust themselves trying to keep up. There are several subplots that seemed totally unnecessary but Dickey managed to connect them all to our central characters. The novel had a slight urban feel to it and it also contained classic Eric Jerome Dickey comical moments. This is definitely one to pick up.

Eric and Chasing Destiny are

Excellent! "Chasing Destiny", is only my 2nd EJD book, but I've got to say this man's intelligence and writing style are out of this world. Am I the only one amazed by his intelligence? I mean, he is taking full advantage of the fact that he has his readers' attention, and he is exposing us to all kinds of uncommonly used words. In addition to, introducing us to unfamiliar poems, authors, music artists, novels, and films. Hell, the guy is just smart, which enchances his writing ability 100%. Between this book and "Genevieve", I'm giving Napster and Webster's Dictionary a serious workout with trying to keep up with him...LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I truly enjoyed this book and I hope a part 2 will follow.
