It's awesome

This poem educates and gives us an idea of how a king should be .This story is about a man who is not only a great warrior but a great king also.

Killing the Dragon

BR's translation in meter is awesome; the style of the book is neat, very slick and easy to carry around. The end is spectacular! Although it was written a long time ago, Beowulf's struggle and defeat over death resonates in many different ways even today.

An epic of historical significance & a superb translation.

Post-literacy means post-history for a literate culture. I was saddened by the self-righteous ignorance of some post-curious undergrad reviewers of this book. This is evidence in support of the thesis that post-modernity has no place for any other era or cultural perspective than a post-realist cyber-virtuality. For those still wondering about previous world-views, however, this translation is a deft poetic rendition of a poem that is truly difficult to translate. (I've tried.)

An enjoyable experience

I enjoyed this book/poem? very much. I will say, however, that I wouldn't have enjoyed it had I been forced to read it in school. You have to accept the book for what it is, and not what your twentieth century mind wants it to be. I didn't like that it named a sword but didn't consider a slave worthy of being counted as a person, but being that it was a reflection of those times, I tried not to judge it too harshly. Some of the lines were downright lyrical, others were hard to understand, but I thought Mr. Raffel did an excellent job of translating the story.

I will refer back to certain passages again, though it's not a book I'll read over and over.
