An Intense Read

This book is unlike any other book I have ever read. The story dealt with such serious issues, that it was sometimes difficult to continue reading. The characters were so despicable, that I could only feel disgust for them (Della included). Although Mable tried to help, she could never seem to do the right thing. In fact, the only family members who had sense were Sam's teenage sons, who nearly killed Hy Lo when they witnessed his disrespectful treatment of Della.

Although it was a "hard" read, this book has deepened the respect that I have for Bernice McFadden as an author. She is truly a skilled storyteller. This book has also made me very grateful and thankful to God for blessing me with a warm, loving, only slightly crazy family.

To forgive or not to forgive

Warmest December is the story of Kenzie, who grew up with a very violent who drunk a lot. He beat Kenzie, her brother and mother. Now years later Kenzie visit her father every day where he is slowly dying at the hospital. Kenzie dosen't understand what makes her go seeing how he abused them. Most of the book is Kenzie thinking back on her childhood day's with her very violent father. I throught the book was very well put together, know nasty sex scenes of so many today. I kept waiting to get to the end of the book to see what happened to Kenzie's brother that she kept mentioning. A book worth your read.

Painful, but highly important reading

I found "The Warmest December" to be very painful reading, but couldn't put it down. Through the vehicle of fiction, McFadden studies the impact of alcoholism and domestic abuse upon the lives of children. McFadden explores the emotional, psychological and economic reasons why women stay with abusive men, and the destructive consequences of remaining in such a relationship. Although she vividly depicts the nightmare of cruelty and destruction that can accompany alcoholism, she also writes about the potential for healing and redemption.

ALCOHOLIC VIOLENCE!!!

THE WARMEST DECEMBER is a beautifully written and clearly told story about the life of a family controlled by the demonic possession of alcohol abuse. It's heartwrenchingly sad to visualize the physical, mental and emotional damage this family, particularly the children, suffer. HiLo, the alcoholic father, is fighting his own demons through the bottle. His way of exerting control is to burtalize his wife, Della, and his children, Kenzie and Malcolm. Each deals with the personal pain in their own unique way. This book also shows that alcoholic abuse, if not stopped, can continually move through the generations in a family. THE WARMEST DECEMBER is made even more beautiful for allowing emotional maturity, recovery, understanding and forgiveness. THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK!!!

Heartbreaking and Gut-wrenching, Powerful story...

I just recently completed Bernice McFadden's second novel, The Warmest December. What a compelling, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching story, that's sure to pull at your heart strings. Page after page, I couldn't imagine what would happen next. My heart ached for the Kenize and Malcolm Lowe and the pain they had to endure from their abusive father Hy-Lo(Hyman Lowe)There were times when I thought how could anyone be that cold-hearted and mean-spirited and then you meet Gywenth Lowe, his mother and their grandmother, who passed the genocidal traits down to her sons. What enraged me even more was that their mother Della, had the opportunities time and time again to save her children and herself as well but, sacrifices it all for what she values. Her own mother couldn't convince her, she was playing with fire. Her confession at the end of the book, was truly a shocker but, gave me some type of understanding as to why they endured so much pain and heartache at the hands of a mad-man. I found that even in those situations of domestic abuse, women try to convince themselves and others that, they're loved, well-cared for, etc. This story gives insight into the lives of abused children and all they suffer as children and possibily adults. You see the toll that it takes on other family members and friends of the family as well. Berince did a beauitful job bringing such a touchy subject to light and giving Kenize Lowe the strenght to share her story with the reader. Bravo!! Bravo!! Bravo!!
