Enlightened - A Review of Standing in the Light

My daughter chose this as our first Dear America book and I stayed up all night reading it! Fabulously written in diary form, this story held me captive with its beautiful, descriptive entries of a young heroine's daily experience with her Quaker and Indian families. This book was an engaging and VERY informative historical lesson on social development, history, Native American and Quaker culture and geography. We especially enjoyed the eloquence of young Caty's entries reflecting the emotional side of every young girl and the growth of her character over the course of the year. As the story closes, she has a wisdom, empathy and peace we all wish our daughters could have. Appendices include illustrations of popular dress in both cultures, historical events such as the meeting of William Penn with the Native Americans, treaties between the English and Native Americans, historical background about the English-French conflicts and a brief insight into the genre of the captive diary. Superbly done.

Passionate

"Standing in the Light" was written for a young audience, but I believe that it would serve to entertain history-loving adults as well. Oh, yes, and hopeless romantics like myself. When I first read this book, I was around Catherine's age, and having re-read it a few years later, I enjoyed it for different reasons. It could have easily categorized the settlers or the Native Americans as the villains, but instead it takes a fascinatingly objective look at the struggle for land in colonial Pennsylvania, and one young girl's unconventional coming of age. I would highly reccommend this book as a historical drama, a romance and a story of a strong young woman forced into a difficult understanding of the world around her.

Not Just for Kids!!!

If you love history read The Dear America Series. "Standing in the light" is one of my favorites. It provides a glimpse into two cultures-Caucasian and Native American. It also tells what occurs when these cultures have contact with one another. There is much tension and heartache that occurs when Catherine Carey Logan is kidnapped by the Delaware. The family bonds and love between Catherine, her brother and the Delaware are even more remarkable. This story is a beautiful one, and these books are not just for kids. I am a 35 year old grad student and love them!! Also recommended for adults and older kids that enjoy this book "The White" by Deborah Larsen
