One of those books that lives with me

If you're lucky, every now and then you read a book that becomes part of your life, because you think about it so often. For me this is one of those books.

If there is a finer novel set in the US Army in the time right before Pearl Harbor, I haven't read it. Unforgetable characters, people with huge flaws who are nontheless interesting and likable.

Don't judge this book by the movie - as with most movies, it's just an illustration to be put in the front piece of the book. Do yourself a favor and check out the James Jones original.

From Here to Eternity

This novel "From Here to Eternity by James Jones is an excellent novel. It grabs the readers attention and then keeps it. I would recommend this novel to anyone from age 15 up and to anyone that has ever been in any type of the military. Jones makes this novel flow with the amazing life of Robert E. Lee Prewitt. This is a great main character because like a hero Prewitt is extremely tough and determined. The novel becomes even more interesting with the secret affair of character Warden and Karen, and many other page turning events. This is a very down to earth novel and it reads quickly and easily.

a cure for a young man's homesickness

...There is something very American about this book. Reading it in the setting of another culture, this point really struck me. As a boy turning 17, there was much of interest to me throughout the book. As a matter of fact, reading it is a good "coming of age" experience. The fighting, the gambling, the swearing, the whoring....whew! All that and a great plot, excellent characters, and a pathos that emerges from a sea of masculinity. I have read some books about WWII where I was disappointed to find that the first 600 pages were spent getting to know the characters and the last 20 pages were about the combat. "Battle Cry" and "The Dirty Dozen" come to mind. This fits the category as well but it wasn't a disappointment at all. Indeed, it is better than Jones's "The Thin Red Line"; the "combat" book of the trilogy. This is a story of military life on the eve of WWII in a world of misfit soldiers whose only future is tomorrow. Over the years I have occasionally forgotten the names of the characters but I always remembered the name of the locale; the Schofield Barracks. This is a story of the life that was lived in the drudgery before the chaos and heroism. Despite what you may hear, it's not too long...

From Here to Eternity

"From Here to Eternity" is one of the best novels I have read. It portrays the life of soldiers in the American army in months before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. It shows the life of the soldiers as simple but yet so controlled by the officers. There are few things both emotional and physical that the soldiers have that the officers can not take from them.
This novel has an excellent main character, Robert E. Lee "Prew" Prewitt. This soldier lives his life perfectly, doing only what he wants. While doing this it does get him in to trouble and make him miserable but he always has the fact that everything he is put through is because he chooses to be put through it. The author, James Jones, does a great job of making Prew's short life interesting, from his girlfriend who is also a prostitute, to his choices that can cause him so much pain.
The other characters of this novel were also well written. Warden and tough man and a hard worker, became a very sensitive man before the readers eyes because of his lover. His lover also happens to be Karen Holmes the wife of Warden's and the rest of the company's boss. Also there is Bloom who is every fighters hero, who suddenly kills himself for a reason that no one can think of.
I would recommend this novel to anyone who has ever heard of Pearl Harbor. This novel ties in the real life of a soldier in the 40's with a fairy tale that keeps you interested. It reads quickly and it is the kind of novel that you want a sequel to it just to keep it going.
